NtE Launch Gameplay Preview | Champion!
Hethereau doesn't tell you how to live. It provides possibilities. But to get the most out of Hethereau, there's only one way…
Presented by NtE.
As NtE gears up for its global launch, this first gameplay preview centers on Champion, a frontline fighter crafted to lead skirmishes and tilt engagements in your favor. The session focused on feel, kit interactions, and how this new option fits into the current tempo of NtE’s battles. What follows is a polished draft of early impressions from hands-on time with an early-access build, intended to give readers a clear sense of identity, playstyle, and potential in team scenarios.
Overview: Champion’s role and identity Champion is designed as a durable frontline presence with high-impact engagement options and reliable crowd control. The kit rewards precise timing, position plays, and coordinated team pulls. In lane or in the heart of a team fight, Champion excels at forcing enemies to commit to unfavorable trades and creating space for teammates to capitalize on missteps. The design emphasizes a balance between survivability, engage potential, and meaningful follow-through in extended skirmishes.
Kit at a glance - Passive Momentum: Attacks accrue Momentum. At defined thresholds, a bonus effect triggers, reinforcing the choice between aggression and prudent risk management. - Q: Dash Strike: A quick dash-through strike that closes distance and resets basic attack cadence, granting setup for subsequent abilities. - W: Barrier of Resolve: A shield that absorbs incoming damage. Its effectiveness scales with Momentum, rewarding aggressive plays that sustain momentum through fights. - E: Staggering Smash: A targeted area attack with a short stun on hit, ideal for interrupting enemy rotations or setting up follow-through from allies. - R: Judgment of NtE: The ultimate engagement tool. It commits Champion to a high-impact moment, amplifying the team’s CC chain or enabling a decisive finisher when aligned with allies’ crowd control.
Playstyle and practical use In practice, Champion shines when leading with Q to close gaps, using E to apply control, and following with W to weather the counterpunch. The most effective sequences tend to weave Q into auto-attacks, then punish the enemy with E’s stun timing before committing the ultimate. Because Momentum builds through aggression, decision-making around spacing and retreat routes becomes crucial—overextending can drain the shield and reduce the payoff of big abilities.
Example engagement flow: 1) Start with Q to close the gap and auto for a quick momentum boost. 2) Cast E to apply pressure and aim for the stun window. 3) Use W to absorb retaliation and maintain survivability during the CC chain. 4) Follow with R if coordination with teammates is available, or to guarantee a favorable disengage if the enemy retreating path is predictable. A strong read on enemy cooldowns or a quick target swap can turn a skirmish into a decisive team fight win for your squad.
Visuals, audio, and feel The Champion’s animations communicate weight and intent, with crisp hit feedback that makes each successful dash, shield block, and stun feel intentional. Sound design reinforces the sense of a well-timed engage, providing audio cues for both allies and opponents. The visual silhouette and ability effects are distinct enough to read from a distance, aiding decision-making in fast-paced moments.
Launch context and balance considerations As with any new release, Champion will undergo tuning post-launch. Early feedback will influence cooldowns, shield scaling, and the exact telemetry of Momentum thresholds. The preview build prioritizes clarity of kit identity and core mechanics, while final tuning will iterate toward a smooth, balanced experience across diverse team compositions and playstyles.
Team composition and counters Champion slots into a frontline-centric approach that hinges on reliable engage and added survivability. Partners who can chain crowd control, peel, or set up follow-up damage will maximize Champion’s impact. Against highly mobile or burst-heavy opponents, timing becomes even more critical—read their escape tools, time your E stun to catch them as they reposition, and defer R until you have a clear, protected window to capitalize on a miss or cooldown window.
Tips for early adopters - Prioritize tempo: Build momentum early in trades to unlock the W shield and make extended engagements more forgiving. - Coordinate with your team: Communicate when you plan to use R so allies can time their CC or damage bursts for maximum effect. - Manage spacing: Use Q to control distance and avoid overcommitment that leaves you vulnerable to counter-engages. - Watch for cooldown rhythms: Champions with shorter stuns or interrupts can disrupt your combos—pre-emptive pullbacks can protect your frontline stance.
Closing thoughts Champion presents a compelling new approach to NtE’s frontline dynamics: a blend of aggressive entry, survivable presence, and decisive finishers. This draft preview aims to capture the core feel and strategic avenues you can explore from day one, while acknowledging that live release tuning will refine balance and state changes. If you enjoy high-stakes engagements, clean execution, and team-driven play, Champion is poised to become a central pillar of many successful NtE lineups as the launch unfolds.
