The Alters reviewed by Dan Stapleton on PC. Also available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
The Alters is a highly atmospheric sci-fi character study of one man who meets the effects of the formative choices he’s made throughout his life face to face. Managing Jan’s relationships with his alternate selves while extracting enough resources from a hostile alien environment to survive is a balancing act on top of a balancing act, and it cleverly builds up the pressure over the course of its story. Exploration of these barren but eye-catching maps presents a series of puzzles and threats without resorting to blasting aliens, and the conversations and moral dilemmas that arise from Jan’s clones are a novel way to approach a game like this. It’s clearly not a big-budget game with resources to throw at cinematics and character models, but it does a lot with a little to tell its story effectively, and its occasional interface quirks don’t get in the way of that.

The latest official trailer for Genshin Impact introduces Alyosha, a character whose presence signals a fresh chapter in the game’s ongoing narrative and world-building. This preview blends cinematic storytelling with tangible gameplay signals, offering players a concise glimpse into Alyosha’s abilities, environment, and role within the broader Teyvat landscape. Below, we unpack the trailer’s key elements, their implications for gameplay, and what fans can anticipate as new content rolls out. Visual and thematic direction The trailer opens with a stark, wintry tableau that immediately communicates both atmosphere and tone. The cold, blue-tinged palette, coupled with sweeping landscapes blanketed in snow, sets up Alyosha as a figure who thrives in or is defined by this icy frontier. The environment design pays careful attention to light, frost effects, and dynamic weather cues, reinforcing a sense of isolation, danger, and discovery. These visuals are not mere backdrop; they establish the moral and strategic context in which Alyosha operates. Character idenity and design Alyosha’s silhouette, apparel, and equipment signal a niche specialization—likely one that intersects agility, precision, and cold-weather prowess. The trailer emphasizes swift, deliberate motion, suggesting core abilities centered on mobility and controlled engagements. The gear design blends functional warmth with rune-like motifs, hinting at a synthesis of practical combat utility and arcane or elemental potential. The character’s demeanor conveys focus and resilience, aligning with a narrative arc that invites players to explore loyalty, choice, and personal growth within a hostile, snowbound region. Abilities and combat cues From the snippets of action, Alyosha appears to wield a combination of rapid melee exchanges and ranged or charged attacks that leverage the icy environment. The trailer showcases a sequence of agile dashes and precise strikes, followed by a signature ability that creates or manipulates frost, possibly amplifying damage, control, or mobility. While the exact mechanics remain to be fully revealed, the emphasis on timing, positioning, and environmental interaction suggests a kit that rewards strategic play and situational awareness in multiple combat scenarios. Narrative implications and world-building Alyosha’s entry seems to expand the lore surrounding the region depicted in the trailer. The wintry setting hints at a new locale rich with history, factions, and seasonal challenges. The dialogue and visual storytelling imply a personal quest arc that intertwines with broader regional conflicts, offering players opportunities for exploration, character-driven quests, and meaningful choices that affect outcomes in both the short and long term. Gameplay integration and progression As with previous character introductions, players can anticipate a multi-faceted release: a character banner with distinct ascension materials, new artifacts or sets themed to the region, and related episodic content or events that deepen engagement with the character and the area. Expect unique challenges, story quests, and possibly new co-op objectives that leverage Alyosha’s mobility and frost-centric toolkit. A careful balance between exploration, puzzle-solving, and combat is likely to encourage players to experiment with different team compositions and synergy with existing characters. Strategic takeaways for players - Anticipate a challenge framework that rewards precise timing and frost-centric tactics. - Consider how Alyosha’s mobility can complement ranged or defensive teammates, creating cross-rotation possibilities in spiraling boss encounters or open-world activities. - Prepare for region-specific materials, bosses, and domain drops that align with winter themes and seasonal events. - Stay tuned for details on weapon type, elemental affiliation, and constellation abilities to optimize team building and resource planning. Conclusion The Alyosha: Wintry Hunt trailer serves as a compelling invitation to explore new frontiers within Genshin Impact’s expanding world. By intertwining stark environmental design with a focused combat silhouette and hints of a broader narrative, the trailer sets clear expectations for a character who thrives in snowbound environments and challenging engagements. Players can look forward to a carefully structured release that broadens strategic options, deepens lore, and invites ongoing discovery as the winter landscape unfolds.
