Gears of War: E-Day Campaign Review
Gears of War: E-Day reviewed by Ryan McCaffrey on Xbox Series X, also available on PC.
"By going back to the beginning, Gears of War: E-Day returns to the heart of this series: Marcus Fenix, Dom Santiago, and a Locust horde that’s as terrifying as it is dangerous. E-Day pulls off the tightrope act of giving us a heartfelt prequel with strong characters even when we know how it ends. On a more mechanical level, it also evolves the enemies, weapons, and combat you’d expect to deliver a Gears of War campaign that stands toe-to-toe with any of the others. It wraps up with 10 years still left to go before Marcus gets tossed in prison ahead of the events of the first Gears of War, so here’s hoping the next one stays in the past for a while longer – and that we don’t have to wait another seven years for it to arrive."
Gears of War: E-Day Campaign Review

The E-Day campaign of Gears of War stands as a defining chapter in the franchise, melding relentless combat intensity with a carefully paced narrative that grounds players in a war-torn world. From the opening moments, the game situates you on the front lines of a conflict that feels immediate, personal, and unforgiving. Here, the designers fuse cinematic spectacle with tactile gunplay, delivering an experience that rewards both strategic planning and quick, decisive action.
A core strength of the E-Day campaign lies in its structural design. The mission layouts balance high-octane set-pieces—where cover, movement, and ammunition management are in constant flux—with quieter, tension-building sequences that emphasize atmosphere. The player is frequently reminded that every corner may conceal danger, and this anticipation elevates the satisfaction of successfully advancing through a difficult segment. The pacing oscillates between moments of breathless confrontation and deliberate, methodical progression, creating a rhythm that sustains momentum without feeling aimless.
The game’s combat systems are finely tuned for a modernized cover shooter experience. A dynamic cover system enables fluid transitions between exposed positions and fortified stances, while a robust array of weapons and ammo types demands adaptability. The pacing supports improvisation: a well-timed grenade throw can alter the course of a skirmish, while a precise headshot from a long-range rifle can swiftly end a standoff. The campaign’s design rewards tactical thinking, but it remains accessible, inviting players to experiment with different approaches to each encounter.
Character development and storytelling are conveyed through environmental storytelling, dialogue, and mission objectives that collectively convey a sense of urgency and survival. The human stakes feel tangible, even amid the sprawling military machinery of the Horde’s world. Mortality is real, and the cost of each decision is felt in the cadence of battles and the tone of exchanges between characters. This narrative texture helps elevate the campaign beyond a sequence of battles to a cohesive, emotionally resonant journey.
Technically, the E-Day campaign showcases a strong production value. Visuals convey a world scarred by war, with detailed textures, believable lighting, and weather effects that enhance immersion. Audio design complements the on-screen action, with weapon acoustics, impact cues, and character voices aligning to reinforce the grit of frontline combat. The soundtrack, while occasionally soaring in moments of spectacle, consistently supports the mood without overpowering the gameplay.
For players returning to the series, the E-Day campaign offers a faithful yet refined experience that captures the essence of Gears of War’s signature mood: relentless, brooding, and deeply tactile. It provides a compelling tour through the early days of a war that has become deeply personal for the soldier’s perspective. For newcomers, the campaign presents an accessible entry point into a world where strategy, stamina, and nerves of steel are continually tested against overwhelming odds.
In summary, the E-Day campaign delivers a cohesive, action-forward narrative experience marked by thoughtful design choices, robust gunplay, and a palpable sense of menace. It stands as a high-water mark for its era and a compelling invitation to explore the broader saga within the Gears universe.
