Why handhelds are cooked
Are handheld gaming PCs cooked? We had such high hopes for the future of handheld machines following the launch and success of the affordable Steam Deck, but much like a fart when you're already stuck in an elevator, the memory crisis is making everything worse. Prices are soaring and handheld PCs feel like a very expensive toy these days. Some are as much as a powerful gaming PC...

In the modern digital landscape, handheld devices have become ubiquitous extensions of our daily routines. They promise instant access, constant connectivity, and a compact form factor that fits into the most crowded pockets and bags. Yet behind the veneer of convenience lies a series of practical and ethical considerations that savvy users and industry watchers cannot overlook. This post explores why handheld devices are frequently described as “cooked”—not in the culinary sense, but as a metaphor for systems, processes, and incentives that push outcomes away from long-term optimality toward quick, surface-level wins.
1) Design incentives favor speed over depth Hardware and software ecosystems prize rapid iteration, feature density, and short-term engagement metrics. Faster knobs and brighter screens make devices immediately appealing, while deeper performance gains—such as luxurious longevity, robust security, or timeless relevance—often require deliberate, slower engineering cycles. The result is devices that feel powerful at first use but accumulate friction as software updates roll in, batteries age, and compatibility with evolving accessories wanes.
2) The energy of retention over exploration Mobile platforms use a feedback loop that rewards sticky experiences: notifications, curated feeds, and on-device AI that anticipates user needs. While this boosts engagement and monetization, it can also narrow user experimentation, reduce serendipity, and encourage consumptive patterns that degrade over time. The optimization pressure shifts from meaningful capability to habitual interaction, making the overall experience feel complete even as it becomes increasingly engineered to steer attention.
3) Planned obsolescence and ecosystem lock-in Consider the broader environment: app stores, licensing costs, and hardware depreciation all contribute to a creeping sense that devices are temporary waypoints rather than enduring tools. App compatibility, charger standards, and even port configurations change between generations, nudging users toward newer models. This ecosystem choreography creates a cycle where performance improvements arrive on a fixed cadence, while the practical cost of staying current rises more quickly than many consumers anticipate.
4) Security and privacy under pressure As capabilities expand, so do the attack surfaces. Manufacturers and platform providers respond with layered defenses, frequent updates, and complex permission models. While these measures are essential, they also introduce friction for legitimate users and occasionally create gaps that savvy actors exploit. The tension between seamless usability and airtight security is a central reason why some devices feel perpetually “in beta” from a user’s perspective.
5) Sustainability and lifecycle considerations The environmental footprint of handheld devices is non-trinial. Production, distribution, energy use, and end-of-life recycling all accumulate across the product’s lifecycle. When devices are designed for rapid replacement, the cumulative impact becomes a material concern that weighs against the convenience narrative. Consumers and companies alike are increasingly recognizing the need to optimize for durability, repairability, and upgradability without sacrificing core functionality.
6) What this means for users moving forward - Prioritize modularity: Seek devices and ecosystems that emphasize repairability and clear upgrade paths. - Balance convenience with capability: Look for hardware and software that honor both everyday use and long-term value, even if the upfront experience isn’t the flashiest. - Scrutinize data practices: Favor platforms with transparent privacy controls and minimal data-sharing by default. - Advocate for sustainability: Support products and brands that publish lifecycle assessments and invest in responsible recycling.
Conclusion Handheld devices deliver undeniable benefits in portability, immediacy, and connected intelligence. However, the same design and market dynamics that drive rapid adoption can also push outcomes toward convenient but eventually hollow experiences. By recognizing these patterns and choosing products that balance speed with longevity, users can enjoy the strengths of handheld technology while mitigating its less desirable tendencies. The goal is not to resist progress, but to cultivate a more intentional relationship with our devices—where quick wins are complemented by durable value.
