Star Fox Review
Star Fox (2026) reviewed by Jada Griffin on Nintendo Switch 2. Despite knowing nearly all Star Fox 64’s shortcuts and secrets for close to 30 years now, this remake’s impressive coat of paint and compelling new cutscenes made me smile like I just did my very first barrel roll. Finding hidden routes to unlock different stages or small optimizations to push my score sky high is still much deeper than it first appears, keeping the brief campaign runs fun across multiple playthroughs. And while the new Challenge mode and revamped multiplayer don’t go quite as far as I’d like in terms of content or creativity, they are still amusing ways to shake things up once you’ve exhausted every alternate route. Given the decade-long drought since the disappointment that was Star Fox Zero in 2016, Nintendo was wise to return to Star Fox’s best game in order to revitalize this 33-year-old series, and has reached a new peak for it in doing so. Hopefully this is just the beginning for Fox McCloud, because Nintendo has proven the Arwing isn’t out of style quite yet.
From its debut era to its modern legacy, Star Fox remains a cornerstone of spaceflight arcade action, blending on-rails shooting mechanics with a surprising depth of pacing, narrative drama, and team dynamics. This review examines how the series established its identity, how the original entry balanced momentum with strategy, and why its influence continues to resonate with both nostalgic fans and contemporary players.
A bold concept, a familiar execution. The Star Fox series introduced players to a spacecraft-mounted squadron led by Fox McCloud, venturing through polygonal skies on a mission to defend the Lylat system from interstellar threats. What set Star Fox apart from other shooters of its era was not just its 3D visuals—though pioneering in their own right—but the way it threaded a sense of purpose into high-speed, on-rails action. Each stage reads like a fast-paced corridor of danger, where the player’s navigation, timing, and resource management determine the difference between a swift escape and a catastrophic crash. The craft’s handling is deliberately responsive, emphasizing precision over brute force and rewarding players who learn stage geometry, enemy patterns, and boss mechanics.
Design that rewards skill. The balance between forward momentum and strategic choice is where Star Fox shines. While the core mechanic is to surge along predetermined paths, players are challenged to manage limited ammunition, prioritize targets, and execute special maneuvers such as barrel rolls or charge shots to maximize damage during critical windows. The on-rails constraint is not a limitation but a design canvas that pushes players to anticipate, react, and adapt on the fly. This creates a rhythm reminiscent of both classic arcade design and early 3D action games, where mastery is earned through repetition and pattern recognition rather than exhaustive exploration.
Team dynamics and narrative texture. The supporting cast—Peppy, Slippy, and Falco—adds a layer of personality that elevates the mission from a mere score chase to a coordinated operation. The dialogue, while concise, injects humor, tension, and a sense of camaraderie that mirrors real-world mission briefings. This interpersonal thread helps anchor the adrenaline-fueled action in a tangible human context, making each successful run feel like a shared achievement rather than a solitary conquest.
Visuals, sound, and atmospheric cues. Early Star Fox games leveraged polygonal fidelity to convey speed, scale, and space’s vastness. The visuals may appear primitive by today’s standards, but the sense of flight, the color palettes of nebulae and enemy fleets, and the audio cues for power-ups or failed evasions contribute to a cohesive and memorable sensory experience. The score—snappy, synthesized, and propulsive—complements the pacing, often signaling imminent danger or triumphant momentum with swells of tempo that keep players immersed even when the path ahead is narrow.
Playability and accessibility. For new players, Star Fox offers immediate gratification: fast action, simple core controls, and a clear objective. For veterans, there are subtler layers—enemy spawn timings, weapon management, and the choreography of boss battles—that reward deliberate practice. The series sustains a balance between learning curves and forgiving design, allowing a broad range of players to experience the thrill of a perfectly executed run while still presenting room for deeper mastery.
Legacy and impact. Star Fox’s influence extends beyond its immediate gameplay loop. It helped popularize on-rails shooters in a 3D space, inspired generations of developers to experiment with blendings of exploration, rapid-fire combat, and narrative tone, and contributed to a broader conversation about how machinery, velocity, and margins of error shape player experience. Even as gameplay evolved with the passage of consoles, the core promise endured: the exhilaration of piloting through astonishing, peril-filled skies with a trusted squad and a stubborn resolve to reach the other side of the screen.
Bottom line. Star Fox remains a touchstone for players who value precision, momentum, and a sense of teamwork under pressure. Its design philosophy—lean, fast, and architected for mastery—continues to feel relevant in an era of expansive open worlds. If you crave a classic action game that honors speed without sacrificing strategy, Star Fox offers a compelling, enduring flight through space that still holds up under scrutiny and salutes the brave pilots who chart the stars.
