From BAFTA Award nominee Paul Rutman, “Criminal Record” is a powerful, character-driven drama set in the heart of contemporary London, exploring the impossibility of policing when the truth is up for grabs. In season two, when a young man is stabbed to death at a political rally, rival police officers June Lenker and Daniel Hegarty are forced into an uneasy alliance. But what starts as a hunt for a murderer escalates into an undercover operation to foil a far-right bomb plot in the heart of London.
Season two reunites Capaldi as ‘Detective Chief Inspector Daniel Hegarty’ and Jumbo as ‘Detective Sergeant June Lenker.’ Dustin Demri-Burns, Luca Pasqualino, Luther Ford, Lyndsey Marshal and Peter Sullivan join the cast in addition to the returning ensemble that includes Shaun Dooley, Stephen Campbell Moore and Charlie Creed-Miles.
“Criminal Record” is produced for Apple TV by Tod Productions and STV Studios, and executive produced by BAFTA Scotland Award winner Elaine Collins, Rutman, Capaldi and Jumbo. The series is directed by Ben A. Williams and Joelle Mae David.

Do you know what unconscious bias is? Catch up on #CriminalRecord before Season 2 premieres April 22
As a society, we often confront bias without recognizing it, mistaking it for objective judgment or mere personal opinion. Unconscious bias refers to the attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions, and decisions in an unconscious way. These biases arise from exposure to cultural norms, media portrayals, and personal experiences, and they can influence everything from hiring decisions to how we interpret news and interact with others.
Understanding unconscious bias is not about assigning fault to individuals, but about recognizing patterns in our thinking that may lead to unfair outcomes. By identifying these patterns, we can implement practical strategies to mitigate their impact in our daily lives, workplaces, and communities. Some common areas where unconscious bias shows up include:
- Implicit preferences related to race, gender, age, or socioeconomic status – Snap judgments based on first impressions or superficial cues – Assumptions about capabilities or character tied to stereotypes – Selective attention to information that confirms preconceptions
In today’s media landscape, shows and stories that explore the grey areas of truth and perception can illuminate how bias operates behind the scenes. The streaming series #CriminalRecord invites viewers to examine how bias shapes investigations, narratives, and public perception. As Season 2 approaches, premiering on April 22, there’s an opportunity to reflect on the ways bias can distort outcomes—and the importance of scrutinizing evidence, asking questions, and embracing diverse perspectives.
Why this matters beyond entertainment:
- It cultivates critical thinking: When viewers challenge their assumptions, they become more deliberate about the sources of their beliefs. – It promotes fairness: Acknowledging bias is a step toward more equitable decision-making in all sectors, including law, education, and media. – It enhances storytelling: Complex, bias-aware narratives often lead to richer character development and more nuanced plots.
How to engage responsibly with content that tackles bias:
- Notice your reactions: Pause when a scene triggers a strong snap judgment and ask what assumption underlies it. 2. Seek alternative viewpoints: Read reviews or analyses that present different interpretations of a character’s actions or the evidence at hand. 3. Examine the evidence: Distinguish between facts, interpretations, and insinuations presented within the story. 4. Reflect on impact: Consider how the portrayal of bias might influence real-world attitudes and behaviors.
Season 2 of #CriminalRecord promises to deepen this exploration, inviting thoughtful dialogue about how unconscious bias shapes our understanding of truth, justice, and accountability. As the premiere on April 22 draws near, take a moment to refresh your awareness of bias, and prepare to engage with the series in a more intentional, discerning way.
