PC Gamer is the global authority on PC games. For over 30 years, we’ve been at the forefront of covering PC gaming with worldwide print editions, around-the-clock news, features, esports coverage, hardware testing, and game reviews, as well as our popular PC Gaming Shows.
In the ever-evolving landscape of PC gaming hardware, few moments reveal the humor and charm of a device quite like an Easter egg hidden in the Steam Controller. Behind the sleek exterior and meticulously crafted button layout lies a playful nod to one of cinema’s most iconic sound effects: the Wilhelm scream.
For the uninitiated, the Wilhelm scream is a short, unmistakable audio cue that has appeared in hundreds of films since its first known use in the 1951 movie Distant Drums. Over decades, it has become a favorite in-joke among filmmakers, sound designers, and gamers alike. Its presence in unexpected places serves as a wink to fans and a reminder that even technical gear can carry a sense of whimsy.
The Steam Controller, designed to bridge the gap between traditional console play and the flexibility of a PC setup, is packed with features: dual analog sticks, trackpads, dual-stage triggers, gyro controls, and a robust customization suite. It’s precisely this versatility that makes Easter eggs feel authentic rather than gimmicky. When a developer embeds a playful sound cue into the controller’s software or accompanying demo, it transforms routine interaction into a shared moment of levity.
What does this particular Easter egg look like in practice? In certain firmware builds and official demonstrations, rapid button sequences or specific actions trigger a hidden audio clip—an unmistakable Wilhelm scream—paired with a light pulse or a brief vibration. The effect is intentionally lighthearted: a reminder that gamers, technicians, and designers alike value moments of communal culture within technology.
From a design perspective, Easter eggs like this serve several purposes. They reward curiosity, encourage exploration of settings and controls, and humanize a piece of hardware that could otherwise feel purely functional. For developers, it’s an opportunity to express personality and onboard communities with a shared joke that’s evolved into a historical pop culture artifact.
If you’re curious about experiencing this Easter egg yourself, ensure your Steam Controller is running a recent firmware and that you’re using a supported demo or game profile where the Easter egg has been documented to appear. As with many Easter eggs, accessibility can depend on firmware updates, regional releases, and the specific software bundle included with your hardware.
Beyond the novelty, the Wilhelm scream Easter egg stands as a reminder of how gaming gear can blend precision engineering with soft storytelling. It’s a small, well-timed joke that doesn't distract from performance but adds a layer of personality—an invitation to smile, explore, and appreciate the culture that surrounds interactive entertainment.
In the end, the Steam Controller’s Wilhelm scream is more than a nod to a classic sound effect. It’s a testament to the collaborative spirit of the gaming community: engineers, developers, and players co-creating experiences that feel iterative, inclusive, and delightfully unexpected.
