In the fast-paced world of next-gen gaming, teaser trailers set the stage for what players can expect, while also signaling a studio’s design philosophy and technical ambitions. The announcement trailer for What Goes Up—an upcoming title for the PlayStation 5—does just that. It blends a restrained narrative thread with bold visual decisions, inviting viewers to infer gameplay mechanics, world-building tenants, and the emotional stakes of the journey to come.
From the outset, the trailer hinges on a dual rhythm: a grounded, human-scale moment paired with rising, cinematic spectacle. The opening sequence introduces a character whose ordinary surroundings gradually peel away, revealing a hazard, a choice, or a mystery that promises to redefine the protagonist’s trajectory. This approach is surprisingly effective for a short-form reveal, because it foregrounds stakes without overloading the audience with exposition. In a few brisk beats, the trailer communicates motive, setting, and tonal intent with economy and clarity.
Visually, What Goes Up leverages the PS5’s capabilities to deliver a tactile sense of weight and atmosphere. The environments blend photorealistic textures with stylized lighting cues that make each scene feel tangible, almost tangible enough to reach out and touch. There is a careful balance between dense, architectural environments and momentary pauses—a design choice that allows players to feel the scale of the world while staying anchored to character-driven storytelling.
The trailer’s audio design reinforces its cinematic ambitions. A restrained score escalates at key moments, supporting emotional beats without overpowering dialogue or ambient sounds. Subtle sound effects—footsteps on varied surfaces, distant machinery, and environmental wind—build a sonic texture that enhances immersion without distracting from the narrative thread. This disciplined audio approach ensures that the promise of gameplay remains intact: the trailer hints at exploration, traversal, and interaction, but leaves room for curiosity about how these elements will feel in actual play.
Narratively, What Goes Up appears to center on choices that impact both personal arcs and the wider world. The trailer suggests a connective tissue of relationships, consequences, and moral ambiguity, inviting players to weigh decisions that may alter the course of the story. While trailers are designed to spark curiosity, the material hints at a structure in which exploration and problem-solving propel progress, rather than relying solely on combat or spectacle.
From a design perspective, several clues point toward aiming for a thoughtful balance between narrative pacing and player agency. The pacing of cutscenes versus gameplay sequences seems calibrated to reward attentive observation and curiosity. The environments suggest a rich, interconnected world where traversal mechanics—whether platforming, stealth, or puzzle-solving—could be the vessel through which the story unfolds. If executed faithfully, this balance could deliver a more enduring sense of discovery than a purely action-driven trailer.
What Goes Up’s announcement trailer also serves as a communications tool for the broader PS5 ecosystem. It signals a commitment to technical excellence while signaling a distinct tonal voice—one that blends grounded drama with speculative, almost mythic elements. For players who value immersive worlds and meaningful choices, the trailer positions the title as a potential anchor within a crowded launch window, offering a promise of depth that extends beyond surface-level spectacle.
In evaluating the trailer on its own terms, the success lies in its efficiency: it introduces a premise, hints at mechanics, and establishes an emotional throughline without overexposing the audience to spoilers. It respects the viewer’s capacity to fill in gaps, a strategy that often yields longer-term engagement as more details are gradually revealed through gameplay footage and developer diaries.
As anticipation builds for What Goes Up, the trailer leaves a few essential questions in the air: What are the core mechanics that will define the player’s interaction with the world? How will choices influence relationships and the broader setting? What visual and audio signatures will distinguish this title within the PS5 catalog? The release already signals that the project aims to leverage PS5’s strengths—rapid loading, expansive environments, and tactile feedback—while pursuing a story-driven experience that aspires to resonate beyond a single gameplay session.
For industry observers and fans alike, the trailer serves as a reminder that an effective reveal is more than a spectacle; it is a compact contract with the audience. It promises a journey that feels both intimate and expansive, grounded in character while unafraid of ambitious, world-building ideas. If What Goes Up follows through on these early promises, it could become a memorable entry in the PS5 library—one that invites players to climb, fall, and rise again as the narrative unfolds.
