Afterworld: The First Hands-On Preview: A (Probably Too Early) Taste of Paradox’s Next Big Thing
I don't know about you, but my plans for the apocalypse involve hiding in a comfy bunker and playing hundreds of hours more of Paradox grand strategy games like Crusader Kings 3. And now I'll be able to play out the apocalypse during the apocalypse with the studio’s first new grand strategy game franchise since 2019's Imperator: Rome, Afterworld. Set in a not too far future North America that has been devastated by an intentionally vague cataclysm, it combines RTS and grand strategy elements as you rebuild the world in any image you desire – from terraforming to cannibalism. And that's an enticing proposition. Previewed by Leana Hafer

In the sprawling ecosystem of strategy games, Paradox Interactive has long stood apart for its willingness to let players peek behind the curtain—into the gears, the systems, and the long-term consequences of every design choice. The first hands-on preview of Afterworld, Paradox’s latest ambitious project, fits squarely within that tradition. It’s a curious glimpse into a game that promises to meld grand-scale strategy with a more intimate, narrative-driven experience. What follows is a measured first impression of the systems on display, the potential trajectories for the game’s development, and the questions that will matter most as the public beta window eventually opens.
The core premise of Afterworld is deceptively simple: a world that evolves in real time based on the aggregate decisions of countless players, factions, and AI empires. The preview build places you in a mid-to-late stage of a long arc, where previous decisions have created a fragile balance, and new choices threaten both progress and stability. The setting—a richly textured, surprisingly tactile planet with visible scars from past campaigns—feels authentic in its design. It invites exploration not merely as a means of expansion, but as a way to unearth the consequences that sum up into a broader historical narrative.
Mechanically, the preview demonstrates Paradox’s trademark depth, with interlocking systems that reward long-term planning. Resource management remains a familiar backbone—energy, materials, and population each interact with fluctuating markets and environmental pressures. What stands out is how Afterworld layers in time-accelerated loops: events ripple through eras, but actions taken in one cycle influence outcomes in the next, creating a living record of cause and effect. This is not a simple build-and-collapse economy; it’s a tapestry where each thread is connected to many others, and the player’s job is to navigate those connections with foresight.
Diplomacy and faction management receive a fresh treatment. Alliances are dynamic, forged through shared interests, mutual protection, and the occasional betrayal that keeps the political landscape tense. The AI factions display a degree of personality in their decision-making that helps the world feel lived-in rather than procedural. Yet for all the promise, there are moments where the complexity threatens clarity. The preview emphasizes a robust tutorial and layered onboarding, but the risk remains that new players may feel overwhelmed by the density of options—an issue Paradox has historically addressed through scalable difficulty and optional micro-guides.
One of the most compelling aspects is the storytelling potential. Afterworld hints at a narrative engine where emergent stories rise from the convergence of player actions and scripted lore events. If executed well, the game could offer a rich cadence of chapters—periods of renewal, crisis, and rediscovery—each shaped by the strategic landscape you helped author. The balance between procedural narrative and handcrafted lore will be crucial: too much automation can feel impersonal, while too little can undercut the sense of a grand, evolving world.
Visual and audio design in the preview convey a polished, cinematic mood without sacrificing the practical clarity needed for strategic planning. The map is detailed without becoming cluttered, and the UI follows a sensible hierarchy that prioritizes critical information while still inviting deeper dives when players have the time. Sound design underscores the weight of decision-making, with ambient cues that reflect the health of ecosystems, the strength of fleets, and the volatility of political factions.
Performance in the preview is solid for a project of this ambition. There are occasional hitches during heavy-turn moments or when many events collide, but the technical frame feels sturdy enough to support longer play sessions. Given Paradox’s history, a stable post-launch trajectory will depend on modular patches that refine balance, expand content, and smooth out any early friction points in progression curves or diplomacy stacks.
From a design standpoint, the most tantalizing questions center on pacing, progression, and player agency. How steep will the learning curve be for newcomers, and how gracefully will the game scale as players reach mid-game density? Will the progression paths encourage diverse playstyles—conquest, trade, cultural influence, or hybrid strategies—or will the game nudge most players toward a dominant meta? The balance between strategic sovereignty and shared world evolution will determine whether Afterworld becomes a shared tapestry that rewards collective foresight or a more fragmented arena where rivalries eclipse collaboration.
For fans of Paradox’s catalog, Afterworld promises the signature blend: meaningful decisions with far-reaching consequences, a sandbox that respects the player’s strategic acumen, and a world that rewards long-term investment. For newcomers, there is a clear invitation to engage with a system that is both accessible on the surface and endlessly intricate beneath. The preview leaves us with a taste—a hypothesis, really—that the game could redefine how large-scale strategy carries narrative weight without sacrificing tactical clarity.
As always with a project of this scale, the true test lies in the convergence of systems, storytelling, and the lived experience of play. If Paradox can translate the promise of Afterworld into a coherent, well-supported experience at launch, the game could stand as a bold step forward in the genre. The early hands-on session provides enough signal to suggest that the core vision is not only feasible but potentially transformative: a world where decisions echo across lifetimes, and players see the consequences of their choices ripple in real time across a living, breathing planet.
In the coming months, expectations will crystallize around how the development team tunes the balance of power between diplomacy, resource management, and narrative progression. What remains clear is that Afterworld has captured attention by presenting a credible path to a next big thing in strategy games—one that asks players to think beyond immediate gains and imagine the long arc of a world in motion.
