Hellraiser: Revival Review
Hellraiser: Revival reviewed by Tristan Ogilvie on PlayStation 5. Also available on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.
"As someone who’s been seriously spooked by the Hellraiser movies since I was barely tall enough to reach them on the top shelf of my local video store, I certainly got some thrills from staring down cenobites in Hellraiser: Revival as I stalked the cold, concrete chambers of the sprawling otherworld labyrinth that they call home. Its combat is derivative but solid enough to serve up a satisfying amount of slaughter, and some of the not-safe-for-work (or home) puzzles are certainly memorable, if not particularly challenging. However, Revival often struggles to sustain tension, with enemy encounters that are all too easily manipulated, a story propped up by too much telling and not enough showing, and obnoxiously repeated boss fights and chase sequences that make its nine-hour runtime suffer from more bloat than Butterball’s belly. While the studded scalp of otherworld antagonist Pinhead absolutely looks the part, it’s a shame that little else in Hellraiser: Revival has been nailed to anywhere near the same extent."
When a franchise resurfaces after years of dormancy, expectations rise and risks multiply. Hellraiser: Revival arrives with a confident sense of purpose, aiming to honor Clive Barker’s twilight-edged mythology while inviting a contemporary audience into a story that balances horror, philosophy, and visceral spectacle. The result is a film that acknowledges its roots without becoming a mere rehash, delivering both atmosphere and ideas that sustain its most memorable moments.
Atmosphere and design From the opening frames, Revival establishes its tonal compass: a damp, metallic chill that lingers in the air, punctuated by sudden, surgical bursts of light and sound. The Cenobites remain the franchise’s most compelling enigma — otherworldly arbiters who blur the line between punishment and revelation. The production design leans into tactile textures: braided wires, chrome-and-leather fixtures, and corridors that feel both ceremonial and claustrophobic. The visual language respects the original’s grotesque beauty while incorporating modern sensibilities—more restraint in color, more emphasis on sound design, and a willingness to let the audience fill in the gaps with their own fears.
Character and motivation The core cast is built around individuals whose desires unravel in ways both relatable and terrifying. Protagonists grapple with guilt, temptation, and the lure of forbidden knowledge, mirroring the franchise’s long-standing preoccupation with the costs of curiosity. The antagonists—whether representing the Cenobites in their most enigmatic form or a human adversary co-opted by the lure of transcendence—are motivated by a charged mix of longing and loss. This creates a narrative tension that keeps the emotional stakes clear even as the imagery becomes increasingly surreal.
Themes and ideas Hellraiser: Revival revisits Barker’s central question: what happens when desire outpaces restraint? The film probes the moral arithmetic of seeking absolution through ruinous means, and it does not shy away from the consequences that follow. There is a discernible meditation on how pain and pleasure can masquerade as salvation, and how the choices we make in moments of vulnerability echo throughout our lives. While the story operates within a familiar framework, it uses contemporary anxieties—identity, boundary, and the commodification of pain—to add a layer of relevance that resonates with today’s audiences.
Pacing and structure The pacing is deliberate rather than frantic, allowing for a slow burn that culminates in striking set pieces. There are sequences that function like a tight choreography: each movement reveals a fragment of the larger mythos, each revelation reframing what has come before. The screenplay exhibits a disciplined economy; there are no superfluous detours, and even the most unsettling images feel earned by character choice and narrative necessity.
Performance and direction Performances across the board embrace the material’s paradoxical demands: lines that flirt with the philosophical while maintaining a visceral edge. The actors’ commitment helps to humanize a story that could easily drift into abstraction, grounding the extraordinary elements in emotional truth. The director’s long-form vision consistently translates Barker’s DNA into a modernized aesthetic—respectful, bold, and unafraid to take risks with pacing and tone.
Creep, awe, and restraint One of Revival’s quiet triumphs is its ability to evoke awe without thrilling solely on shock value. The film buffers its most extreme imagery with moments of quiet contemplation and moral clarity, which heightens the impact of the more graphic sequences. This balance — between restraint and riotous invention — is where the film earns its space within the pantheon of horror that aspires to more than cheap scares.
Conclusion Hellraiser: Revival succeeds as a thoughtful revival that honors the franchise’s legacy while charting a clear path forward. It invites both longtime fans and newcomers to confront the boundaries of desire, pain, and transcendence, asking provocative questions about what we would endure for meaning or escape. If the goal was to reintroduce a world that can chill and provoke in equal measure, Revival achieves it with a tempered confidence and a keen eye for the intimate details that define true horror cinema.
