The Defiant is a WWII Story Call of Duty Never Told | gamescom 2026
There have been more World War 2 video games than anyone can count, but none of them have shown the historic conflict like this. The Defiant takes us back to the Second Sino-Japanese War and puts us in the boots of Chinese soldiers fighting across numerous real battles. We caught up with Yu Heng Kong, founder of developer Hoothanes and producer of The Defiant, and Chor Yong, COO of publisher 4Divinity, to discuss the different gameplay opportunities offered by each of the campaign’s battles, recreating historical weapons and locations, and telling a war story unlike anything the genre has seen before.
The Defiant is currently in development for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.

The Defiant is a WWII Story Call of Duty Never Told | gamescom 2026

At Gamescom 2026, the gaming world witnessed a bold reimagining of World War II storytelling through The Defiant, a title that challenges conventional narratives while honoring the era’s gravity. This entry positions itself as a cinematic, historically grounded experience that blends meticulous research with modern gameplay design, offering players a fresh lens on a familiar conflict.
The Defiant isn’t a retread of known battles or famous campaigns. Instead, it centers on overlooked chapters—quiet acts of resistance, clandestine operations behind enemy lines, and the personal dimensions of sacrifice that rarely make it into the spotlight. The result is a narrative that feels intimate yet expansive, inviting players to inhabit the choices of ordinary people who became extraordinary through grit, ingenuity, and collective courage.
From a technical standpoint, the game showcases a production pedigree befitting a major studio’s prestige project. Visuals emphasize authentic environments—dust-sapped barns in rural Europe, rain-soaked streets of liberated towns, and the claustrophobic interior of a covert operations bunker. The soundscape anchors the experience with period-accurate audio cues, from the weight of a dropped toolbox to the distant thunder of artillery, grounding players in a world that respects history while leveraging modern processing power for immersion.
Gameplay mechanics are designed to favor stealth, strategy, and consequence. Players navigate missions with a blend of reconnaissance, improvisation, and decisive action. Rather than relying on brute force, The Defiant rewards careful planning, resourcefulness, and collaboration with allies whose backstories unfold through layered dialogue and collectible documents. These elements coalesce into a dynamic campaign that adapts to player choices, ensuring that no two playthroughs feel identical.
Narratively, The Defiant leans into character-driven storytelling. Protagonists emerge as multi-dimensional figures—engineers who repurpose captured gear, medics who improvise life-saving techniques, and pilots who risk everything to safeguard crucial routes. Across a spectrum of perspectives, the game explores themes of resilience, ethics under pressure, and the moral ambiguity that accompanies wartime decision-making. This approach fosters emotional engagement without sensationalism, inviting players to reflect on the complexities of war while remaining anchored in authentic human experiences.
From a development perspective, the project demonstrates a commitment to historical integrity without compromising accessibility. The team collaborates with historians and veterans to verify key details, while also employing contemporary design to ensure a wide appeal. The result is a title that respects the past and pushes the boundaries of how WWII stories can be told in interactive media.
As Gamescom 2026 attendees experienced, The Defiant positions itself as a meaningful addition to the Call of Duty franchise—one that broadens the scope of wartime storytelling and broadens its vignette spectrum. It invites players to engage with history through a lens that emphasizes agency, consequence, and connection. In doing so, the game aspires to be more than entertainment: a narrative experience that honors those who lived through history and invites new generations to learn from it through active participation.
