Season 1 Recap | Hanna | Prime Video
Catch up on Season 1 of Hanna. Watch all three seasons of Hanna on Prime Video.
Raised in total seclusion in the remote woods of Eastern Europe, 15-year-old Hanna (Esmé Creed-Miles) has spent her entire young life training to fight those who hunt her and her mercenary father, Erik Heller (Joel Kinnaman). Her survivalist skills are finally tested when she and Erik are separated upon their discovery by a rogue CIA operative, Marissa Wiegler (Mireille Enos) and her team of agents.
Hanna has no choice but to embark on a perilous journey alone across Europe as she seeks to reunite with her father and evade – and ultimately take down – the dangerous agents who target them. Hanna’s isolated upbringing leads her to face particularly daunting physical and emotional challenges along the way, as she navigates an ever-deepening conspiracy – one that could be the undoing of both her and her father.
Based on Joe Wright’s acclaimed 2011 film, Hanna’s eight-episode first season was written by David Farr (The Night Manager), who co-wrote the original feature. It was produced by NBCUniversal International Studios, Working Title Television and Amazon Studios. Director Sarah Adina Smith (Legion, Room 104) helmed episodes one and two of the series, which filmed entirely on-location in Germany, Hungary, Slovakia, Morocco, Spain and the U.K.
While building on the driving action-conspiracy narrative of his feature script, Farr has also reimagined Hanna’s world for the small-screen with compelling intimacy. Having a wider, longer scope in which to tell her story, Farr has woven a compelling coming-of-age story about a young woman learning about – and experiencing – for the first time what it is to be female in the modern world. Her strength and power as a trained fighter doesn’t preclude her from navigating the awkwardness of her burgeoning sexuality, changes in her body, navigating relationships and other challenges that remind the audience that, underneath Hanna’s grit, is a young woman who ultimately yearns to feel normal.
In her breakout role for television, British actress Esmé Creed-Miles stars as Hanna alongside Joel Kinnaman (Altered Carbon, Suicide Squad, Robocop) and Mireille Enos (The Catch, Prime Video’s Good Omens), who reunite on-screen after co-starring in AMC’s Emmy-nominated crime drama The Killing.

Season 1 Recap | Hanna | Prime Video
As Prime Video’s current slate continues to expand, Hanna’s first season stands out for its disciplined craft, tightly wound storytelling, and a protagonist whose resilience propels every twist. This recap synthesizes the key threads, character dynamics, and thematic throughlines that make Season 1 a robust doorway into the series’ broader world.
Season 1 introduces us to a world where truth is a moving target and loyalties shift with the wind. The narrative follows Hanna as she navigates a landscape of hidden agendas, fractured families, and the ever-present question of who to trust. What begins as a survival story evolves into a meditation on identity, agency, and the ethical complexities of power—whether wielded by mysterious organizations, protective factions, or the individuals who inhabit the margins between them.
Character work anchors the season’s momentum. Hanna’s arc is defined not only by physical endurance but by a steady, evolving sense of self. Her interactions—whether with mentors, antagonists, or peers—reveal a protagonist who negotiates fear with curiosity and determination. The supporting cast, ranging from seasoned operatives to wary allies, adds texture to a world where every alliance comes with a price tag and every choice has consequences.
The season’s pacing reflects a deliberate balance between action and introspection. High-stakes sequences—pursuits, confrontations, and perilous escapes—are interspersed with quieter moments that illuminate backstory and motive. This balance deepens the audience’s investment in characters and raises the stakes of their decisions, making the climactic confrontations feel earned rather than merely shocking.
Visually and technically, the show maintains a crisp, documentary-like tone that suits its thriller sensibilities. The production design emphasizes grit over gloss, with practical effects that ground the more sensational beats in a tangible realism. The soundscape supports this approach, pairing restrained scoring with sound design that accentuates tension without overshadowing crucial dialogue and character beats.
Among the season’s standout motifs is the tension between protection and control. The drive to safeguard Hanna’s future often collides with the imperative to manage information, revealing a broader commentary on how authority cultures shield themselves and what individuals are willing to sacrifice to carve out autonomy. The series uses this tension to interrogate the price of safety and the moral ambiguity that accompanies every protective impulse.
In terms of thematic resolution, Season 1 leaves several lines unresolved in a way that invites continued engagement. Questions about Hanna’s ultimate allegiance, the true scope of the conspiracy surrounding her, and the moral calculus of those who claim to act in her best interests are reframed rather than closed. This deliberately open-ended approach serves as a springboard for subsequent seasons, ensuring that the world remains as compelling as its central mystery.
If you’re returning to Hanna after a first viewing or considering it as a premiere choice for new viewers, expect a thoughtfully constructed thriller that rewards patience as much as adrenaline. Its strength lies in a writerly clarity of purpose: to tell a story that respects intelligence, sustains suspense, and invites viewers to weigh what it means to protect someone—and at what cost.
