Finally, he was there. He had invested his entire fortune, inherited from his uncle in Iquitos, in financing the trip, but he was finally in the Peruvian Amazon. Still tired from the long journey, Rex checked his meager gear; he hadn’t been given much for the old hacienda. Beads of sweat trickled down his forehead, and a cigarette dangled from his lips. The stifling heat and mosquitoes formed a dense cloud around the boat, but Rex seemed oblivious to it all; his mind was focused only on that old text he’d picked up from a colonial-era chest and the fabulous adventure that undoubtedly awaited him. With a mechanical gesture, he pulled out that text, which, although deteriorated by time, was quite eloquent…
