Moss: The Forgotten Relic Review
Moss: The Forgotten Relic reviewed by Will Borger on PlayStation 5, also available on Xbox Series X, PC, and Switch 2.
Moss’s world is stunning, its fairy tale nature is incredibly charming, and aside from a couple of minor issues with the camera (and one weird bug that briefly stalled my progress) this is a very smooth remake that doesn’t feel compromised by breaking free of its VR-exclusive origins. It may be simple, but its combat and puzzles are satisfying and amusing. But for me, Moss’s appeal comes back to Quill and her world, wondering what would happen to them and wanting to see this story through. Moss is a game about a mouse, but Quill has the heart of a lion, and this book is better for having her in it. I’m grateful to have gotten to spend time with her, and for the story we shared. High five, Quill.

In a year crowded with high-profile releases and glossy AAA titles, Moss stands as a quiet testimony to how personal storytelling and tactile design can redefine a genre. This review examines why Moss, while often overlooked in broader conversations about action-adventure and puzzle-platformers, remains a touchstone for players who value atmosphere, craft, and a deliberate pace.
First, the world-building. Moss invites players into a living diorama where every leaf, stone, and corridor seems to breathe with intention. The environments are not mere backdrops; they are active elements that invite exploration and reward curiosity. The game’s setting—a cathedral-like environment stitched together by ancient machinery and natural overgrowth—feels timeless, as if it existed long before recording devices and fast travel. This sense of place becomes a character in its own right, guiding the player through gently escalating challenges that never feel punitive.
Second, the protagonist’s perspective is a quiet revolution in storytelling. Rather than relying on omniscient narration or speech-heavy dialogue, Moss communicates through environmental cues and subtle visual storytelling. The camera work is intimate but expansive, granting players a sense of stewardship over the tiny, agile protagonist as she navigates peril and discovery. This posture—modest, focused, and patient—shifts the narrative burden away from exposition and onto experience. The result is a story that unfolds with the player’s own tempo, encouraging reflection over reaction.
The core mechanics are deceptively simple, yet they are executed with meticulous precision. Movement feels deliberate; platforming segments are framed to minimize frustration and maximize momentum. Puzzles emerge from a confluence of environmental interaction and item use, rewarding experimentation while gently guiding players toward the intended solution. The game never overwhelms with its complexity, yet it sustains a steady undercurrent of curiosity that makes progress feel meaningful rather than obligatory.
Accessibility and design philosophy are integral to Moss’s enduring appeal. The control scheme eschews heavy-handed tutorials in favor of subtle, in-world prompts and a minimal, legible user interface. This approach lowers the barrier to entry for new players while preserving depth for veterans who relish nuanced challenges. It also reinforces the tactile ethos at the heart of the experience: your touch, your pace, your path.
Graphically, Moss embraces a painterly aesthetic that prioritizes mood and texture over hyper-realism. The result is a timeless look—one that ages gracefully and remains legible across display types and resolutions. The sound design complements this with a restrained score and carefully placed environmental cues. The combination creates an immersive, almost meditative mood that lingers long after a session ends.
Narrative threads, while sparse, are not incidental. The lore invites interpretation without locking players into a single reading. Moments of quiet tragedy, small triumphs, and the ever-present question of what it means to protect a fragile world all contribute to a cohesive thematic arc. This is storytelling that trusts the player to fill in gaps, to invest in a world that rewards patience with emotional payoff.
From a performance standpoint, Moss is accessible across a range of hardware configurations, delivering steady frame rates and responsive input handling. Load times are unobtrusive, ensuring that immersion remains continuous. The overall package is polished without the sheen feeling hollow; it honors craft and offers a refined experience that can be savored in short sessions or marathon sittings.
In sum, Moss is a compact triumph of design, pacing, and atmosphere. It proves that a game need not chase spectacle to achieve resonance; instead, it can cultivate intimacy through careful world-building, restrained storytelling, and thoughtful mechanics. For players who crave a thoughtful, artful adventure that respects their time and intelligence, Moss remains a forgotten relic that deserves discovery—and remembrance.
