The Resident Evil Movie Understands Video Games Are Ridiculous, and That's Why It's Great
Zach Cregger's Resident Evil movie understands that video games are ridiculous, and that's why it's great.
Video games are ridiculous. The Resident Evil series is a perfect example. One moment you’re running in terror from a comically oversized, trench-coated tank of a man in a tiny hat; the next, you’re messing around with electronic chess pieces to open a door. These are completely alien situations that, somehow, these games compel us to navigate with rational thought. This is what Zach Cregger understands so well about Capcom’s genre-defining series. His Resident Evil movie knows this is ridiculous, so it lets its lead, Brian, progress through a 90-minute rollercoaster just as we would with a controller in our hands. It’s a fantastic translation of the sensation of playing a survival horror game, never forgetting to include every piece of glorious nonsense that comes with it.

In a landscape saturated with adaptations that chase sincerity at the expense of personality, the Resident Evil film series stands out by leaning into the very absurdity that defines its source material. It does not pretend that zombie outbreaks, super-soldier conspiracies, or neon-lit laboratories are everyday occurrences. Instead, it leans into the over-the-top premise, the melodrama, and the sheer audacity of its premise, turning potential flimsiness into a source of genuine entertainment.
What makes these films resonate beyond their budgetary constraints is not a slavish devotion to video game canon, but a confident understanding of why many gamers fall in love with the medium in the first place: not because of strict realism, but because of fearless storytelling that embraces mystery, tension, and ridiculous spectacle in equal measure. The movies refuse to treat the source material as sacred scripture; they treat it like a playground where wild ideas can collide with campy charisma and practical effects. And in that collision, something unexpectedly cohesive emerges: a mood and rhythm that feels true to the spirit of late-night gaming sessions rather than to documentary-style adaptations.
One of the film’s most persuasive moves is its embrace of incongruity. The Resident Evil universe inherently blends high-stakes biohazard horror with a surprisingly earnest, sometimes melodramatic heart. Characters crack wise in the face of apocalypse, laboratories glow with neon accents, and the threat level oscillates between “life-or-death” and “how did we end up here?” with a gleeful wink. This tonal elasticity is not a flaw; it is the mechanism by which the adaptation stays relevant. It acknowledges that video games, especially the long-running series at its core, thrive on escalation, hooky set-pieces, and cliffhanger beats that reward repeat engagement. When translated to film, that same energy becomes propulsion—driving action, pacing, and memorable visuals that linger long after the credits roll.
From a production perspective, the films demonstrate how to translate interactive fantasy into a watchable cinematic cadence. They favor practical effects, distinctive creature design, and a kinetic sense of movement that captures the tactile thrill of gameplay. The result is a movie experience that feels tactile and immersive rather than purely schematic. The performances lean into archetypes—resourceful protagonists, morally compromised scientists, and shadowy antagonists—yet the writing layers in small, playful moments that fans will recognize as nods to iconic moments from the games. These moments function as a bridge between two forms of entertainment: the interactive and the passive. Viewers who have spent hours navigating tense corridors and reading fragmentary notes will recognize the echoes, while new audiences receive a brisk, self-assured entry point into a world that could easily have remained insular.
Critically, the franchise challenges the notion that adaptations must either be slavishly faithful or completely reinvented. It achieves a synthesis: capturing the mood and mythos of the games while allowing the filmic medium to roam freely. The result is a narrative that respects its source without becoming a museum piece. It understands that fans crave atmosphere, memorable antagonists, and surprising shifts in momentum, but it also understands that cinema is about rhythm, color, and the rush of a well-timed reveal. In that sense, the film series becomes a case study in adaptation done with a wink—knowing that video games are, by their nature, larger-than-life and inviting audiences to smile at their own devotion even as they lean into the thrill of the spectacle.
For readers who approach video game adaptations with skepticism, the Resident Evil films offer a refreshing reminder: ridiculousness, when treated with confidence and craft, can be a strength. The genre benefits when filmmakers stop pretending the source material must be reconstructed into a solemn statue and instead present it as a living, communal playground. The appeal lies not in a scorched-earth commitment to realism, but in a shared enjoyment of the impossible made plausible through style, pace, and charisma. If cinema can capture the exuberance of late-night gaming sessions—the sprint through a labyrinth, the unspoken camaraderie among survivors, the unabashed spectacle of a metropolis under siege—then it has earned its place as a legitimate extension of the very medium it celebrates.
In the end, what makes these films truly great is not their adherence to a canonical ladder of rules, but their willingness to revel in the ridiculous. They acknowledge that video games are not a school of strict realism, but a rich, imaginative playground where heroism, horror, and humor can collide in spectacular fashion. The Resident Evil movies lean into that truth with conviction, and in doing so, they deliver an experience that feels earned, entertaining, and distinctly, unapologetically game-encompassing.
