Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – The Legacy Review
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas legacy review by Luke Reilly. Reviewed on PlayStation 2.
"Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is the single bestselling game on the most successful console in the history of the business. That’s not an accolade you can just earn by accident. Its unprecedented scope and astonishing depth were nothing short of witchcraft, and the incredible attention to detail was staggeringly impressive for something of its size. Its ability to support endless experimentation kept my friends and I busy for years, fooling around with its industry-leading list of cheats and its same-screen co-op chaos long after we’d all finished the story mode several times. Its soundtrack is the stuff of legend; so one-of-a-kind that not even Rockstar itself could quite reassemble the complete thing for subsequent re-releases. In 2004, GTA San Andreas was one of the most extraordinary games I’d ever played. In 2026, the hood done took me under all over again. Sure, the technical limitations of the mid 2000s are always obvious through a modern lens, but you can’t measure ambition in polygons – and GTA San Andreas is overflowing with it."

When Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas released in 2004, it did more than introduce a sprawling virtual state; it redefined how players interacted with open-world storytelling. Rockstar Games delivered a catalytic fusion of ambition, atmosphere, and gameplay that would influence the genre for years to come. This review revisits San Andreas with an eye toward its enduring legacy, not merely its age or nostalgic sentiment, but its lasting impact on game design, narrative breadth, and player agency.
Scope and ambition San Andreas arrived at a time when sandbox games were becoming more ambitious, but few matched its scale. Los Santos, San Fierro, and Las Venturas offered a triptych of neighborhoods, each with distinct vibes and social ecosystems. The game’s map was not just larger; it presented a mosaic of subcultures, from gang dynamics and family loyalties to street-racing culture and business intrigue. The sheer size invited exploratory immersion and rewarded curiosity with a sense of believability that previous entries often struggled to achieve.
Narrative breadth and character faculty The storytelling in San Andreas leans into an epic, multi-threaded arc centered on Carl “CJ” Johnson’s return to his roots, a choice that anchors a sprawling cast of friends, rivals, and factions. The script balances personal stakes—family, loyalty, the pull of old habits—with broader social commentary about corruption, power, and the lure of reinvention. The result is a world that feels lived-in, where choices matter beyond immediate mission goals. Side quests, random encounters, and optional crimes all contribute texture to CJ’s journey, reinforcing the sense that the protagonist is navigating a living, breathing ecosystem rather than a linear path from A to B.
Gameplay evolution and systems depth San Andreas refined the core GTA formula with a package that synergized diverse gameplay loops. The gunplay, vehicle handling, and melee combat were solidified, but what distinguished the title was its systems depth: a progression mechanic that included skill trees for driving, shooting, stamina, and stealth, carried by a robust property and asset system. Players could customize CJ’s physique, outfits, and even car culture associations, creating a personal connection to the character’s evolution. The inclusion of base-building-style micro-goals and territory control added layers of strategy to the open world, inviting players to plan long-term progress alongside immediate objectives.
Cultural resonance and soundtrack curation San Andreas arrived with an audacious soundtrack that spanned decades and genres, from old-school hip-hop hits to rock staples and era-defining tracks. The radio stations were more than background flavor; they were cultural capsules that filmed a sense of era, mood, and place. The game’s dialogue, radio antics, and ambient soundscapes contributed to a distinct civic soundscape—one that captured the transitional period of early 1990s California with a blend of reverence and irreverence. This careful curation helped set a standard for how music and sound design can augment world-building in interactive media.
Technical footprint and lasting accessibility Even as technology advanced, San Andreas remains a touchstone for how a game can age gracefully. Its design choices—dense open world, layered character arcs, and modular side content—translate well across generations, allowing modern players to appreciate its architecture even when graphics and physics have evolved. The title’s modding scene and continued community engagement have extended its lifespan beyond the initial release window, underscoring how a well-crafted sandbox can outlive its generation through flexible, user-driven content.
Legacy and influence The influence of San Andreas is palpable across the open-world genre. It popularized a model in which a single title could combine a vivid, large-scale setting with multiple intersecting narratives, integrated systems for progression and customization, and a cultural texture that felt contemporary and timeless at once. Designers studying the evolution of the sandbox genre often cite its approach to player agency, mission variety, and world credibility as a blueprint for later successes. In retrospectives, San Andreas is frequently acknowledged not only for its immediate pleasures but for shaping the expectations players bring to immersive worlds.
Conclusion: a benchmark, not just a memory Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas endures because it offered more than a city to explore or a sequence of missions to complete. It delivered a comprehensive experiential template—an ambitious, cohesive world where storytelling, mechanics, and atmosphere reinforce one another. Its legacy lies in its insistence that a game world should feel consequential, personal, and expansive all at once. As the medium continues to evolve, San Andreas remains a benchmark for what a truly ambitious open-world game can accomplish when design, narrative, and cultural resonance converge in service of a singular, immersive vision.
