Saw: Genesis Is More Than Just A Dead By Daylight Clone | gamescom 2026
Check out our gory-filled interview with Damian Kocurek, the Creative Director for Saw: Genesis! An upcoming asymmetrical horror game developed by Broken Mirror Games and Anshar Studios. Players will work together as the Accused to solve puzzles, survive traps, and face the Judge, an early architect of Jigsaw’s philosophy.
So, how is Saw: Genesis different from games like Dead By Daylight, and is Billy the Puppet going to be in the game? That, and more, answered here!

At Gamescom 2026, the room hummed with the same anticipation that accompanies any reunion with the franchise that knows how to twist fear into a strategic dance. Saw: Genesis arrives not as a mere clone of existing asymmetrical horror games, but as a deliberate reimagining that foregrounds ingenuity, atmosphere, and player choice within the brutal ecosystem of Jigsaw’s world. What begins as a familiar setup—three to four players navigating a confined arena while one player channels the infamous mastermind—quickly reveals a more nuanced design philosophy that sets it apart from its peers.
First, Genesis leans into the psychological texture that has always defined the Saw franchise. The environments are less about jump scares and more about moral weight and consequence. Each arena is a carefully crafted puzzle box where every move, risk, and alliance is weighed against a ticking clock and a hidden ledger of penalties. The game’s core loop—identify vulnerabilities, exploit the environment, and decide whether to trust your teammates—creates a tense social dynamic that lingers long after a match ends. It’s a deliberate shift from adrenaline-fueled chase sequences to a calibrated interplay of suspicion and strategy.
Secondly, the design team has integrated a robust progression system that respects player choice without diluting the horror. Characters carry distinct abilities and forensic backstories that subtly influence how players approach each round. Instead of a one-size-fits-all loadout, Genesis rewards experimentation and adaptation, encouraging players to tailor strategies to the metric of danger each arena presents. This is not about grinding for cosmetic perks; it’s about accruing practical tools and knowledge that change how you navigate fixed rules and unpredictable twists.
A standout innovation is the modular trap mechanic. Traps are not static fixtures but evolving systems that respond to ongoing play. They require teams to read the room, anticipate the next phase of danger, and pivot on a dime. The result is a living board where one misread signal can cascade into collective peril—or serendipitous escape. This dynamic keeps veterans on their toes while inviting newcomers to learn the language of the game through repeat exposure rather than tutorial hand-holding.
The audiovisual language reinforces the game’s psychological spine. The audio design uses silences, distant clanks, and irregular heartbeat rhythms to punctuate moments of tension, while the visual palette blends clinical brutality with a lurid, almost ceremonial aesthetic. It’s a world that feels lived-in—where every tool, badge, and residue has a story and a consequence. The soundscape does more than heighten fear; it guides players toward anticipating the next phase of the puzzle without giving away the answer.
From a multiplayer standpoint, Genesis shines in its balance. While asymmetric play remains a core mechanic, the developers have implemented matchmaking and progression systems that minimize the bitterness of unfavorable rounds. There is a measurable sense of growth as both “survivors” and “handlers” accumulate experience, unlocking nuanced strategies and safer risk envelopes. This balance is essential in sustaining long-term engagement, particularly in a live-service model that thrives on sustained player investment.
Narratively, Genesis treads a careful line between reverence for the franchise’s lore and the necessity of fresh storytelling. The game respects the mythos of Jigsaw while offering new angles—short vignettes between rounds, embedded lore items, and interactive records that reveal the consequences of each decision. It’s a reminder that Saw is as much about the moral calculus of choices as it is about surviving the hourglass of doom. Players walk away not only with the memory of a brutal escape but with a thread to pull that deepens the franchise’s wider universe.
Performance and accessibility have also received due attention. The title runs with stable frame rates across a range of hardware configurations, and the developers have implemented a thoughtful accessibility roadmap. Adjustable difficulty curves, subtitle options, and feedback mechanisms are designed to reduce barriers to entry while preserving the intensity of the experience for seasoned players.
In sum, Saw: Genesis is more than a clone masquerading as a fresh take. It’s a principled evolution of the asymmetrical horror formula, anchored in psychological depth, modular design, and a durable sense of consequence. Gamescom 2026 offered a convincing demonstration of what happens when a franchise commits to reinterpreting its core ideas rather than rehashing them. For fans and newcomers alike, Genesis promises a chapter of the Saw story that honors the past while daring toward the next inevitable twist.
