Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3: The First Preview
Before playing Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3, we were told that it was built around three core pillars: the story, the new characters, and customizability. Here's what we think after our first hands-on session with it. Previewed by Will Borger
The gaming world is abuzz as Bandai Namco and its development partners tease Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3, offering a tantalizing glimpse into what could be the next evolution of a beloved franchise. The first preview leans into the core strengths that fans have come to expect: familiar combat mechanics reimagined with modern flourishes, a sprawling hub world that invites exploration, and a narrative backbone that respects Dragon Ball’s long-running lore while carving out its own space for fresh adventures.
From the outset, the preview emphasizes accessibility without sacrificing depth. Newcomers are greeted with a gentle onboarding that teaches the basics of combat, movement, and transformation while ensuring veteran players aren’t left wanting. The combat system appears to have been refined for responsiveness, with combo execution feeling tighter and more satisfying. Visual polish is apparent, borrowing the bright, explosive aesthetic that has long defined the series while leaning into higher-resolution textures, smoother animations, and more dynamic particle effects during key attacks and transformations.
A standout talking point is the revisited character creation and progression flow. Players can expect a broader range of customization options, allowing for more personalized Saiyans, Earthlings, Namekians, and other races to stroll the multiverse’s many battlefields. Progression paths seem to blend the familiar upgrade trees with new skill synergies, encouraging experimentation and tailored playstyles—whether you favor raw power, speed, ki control, or a hybrid approach.
The narrative hook appears to center on a time-twisting premise that mirrors Dragon Ball’s episodic energy while inviting players to influence events across different timelines. Early previews hint at collaborative missions, a feature that could recapture the best elements of group play from Xenoverse 2 while expanding it with more robust co-op mechanics and perhaps even larger-scale battles. The promise of engaging with iconic emblems from across the Dragon Ball universe—familiar faces, legendary foes, and new antagonists—appears to be kept intact, with the potential for fresh arc-driven storytelling that honors the franchise’s legacy.
Exploration also receives attention, with the potential for more expansive hubs and interconnected regions. The world design seems to encourage wandering, discovering side quests, hidden challenges, and lore nuggets that deepen the overall experience. While the first preview concentrates on the essentials, there are clear signals that the developers aim to deliver a richer, more persistent world than its predecessors offered.
In terms of competitive play, the initial footage suggests a continued emphasis on balance and precision. Players who enjoy ranked battles and tournaments will want to watch for how the combat system handles meta shifts, counterplay opportunities, and the introduction of new mechanics or weapons. The balance between accessibility for newcomers and depth for experts remains a delicate act, and the preview indicates a thoughtful approach to maintaining that equilibrium.
Sound design rounds out the preview with a soundtrack that nods to the franchise’s iconic motifs—epic orchestral swells, energetic percussion, and moments of quiet tension that spike into explosive crescendos during climactic clashes. Voice work, where present, carries the same enthusiasm and emotion fans have come to expect, helping to anchor new content within the Dragon Ball universe.
If the first preview serves as a compass, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 is aiming to deliver a more polished, expansive, and collaborative experience while preserving the accessible entry point that helped the series grow a dedicated community. The balance of nostalgic touchpoints with fresh ideas will be crucial in the months leading up to release, as players debate character builds, story outcomes, and the best strategies for navigating its evolving meta.
Looking ahead, the anticipation centers on how the final product will synthesize these elements into a cohesive whole. Will Xenoverse 3 honor the series’ beloved combat tempo while introducing meaningful shifts in power dynamics and storytelling? Can it offer a more living, breathing universe that rewards curiosity and teamwork as much as it rewards skill and timing? For fans and newcomers alike, the first preview offers a compelling invitation to imagine a Dragon Ball experience that feels both familiar and boldly new.
