Guillermo del Toro on Making a Bioshock Movie & Why He’ll Will Never Make a Video Game
IGN’s Brian Altano sat down with Academy Award-winning director Guillermo del Toro for a career-spanning interview.
In this Guillermo del Toro interview breakout, Guillermo talks about his collaboration with Hideo Kojima on Unsane and their inability to get it off the ground. Brian and del Toro also chat about the different dynamics at play between video games and movies and the “contentious” calls he had about potentially adapting a couple of video games into movies like Bioshock. Finally, at 3:02, Guillermo del Toro talks about his favorite video games of all time.
In the world of modern cinema, Guillermo del Toro stands as a rare figure who threads macabre imagination with emotional depth. When the conversation turns to adapting a beloved, intricate universe like Bioshock into a feature film, the ideas that emerge are as intriguing as the storytelling himself. Del Toro’s approach to adaptation, the challenges he identifies, and his candid stance on directing video games as a medium reveal a nuanced philosophy about film, interactivity, and the alchemy of world-building.
First, the concept of a Bioshock movie embodies a collision of genres: underwater dystopia, Baroque aesthetics, and a corrosive meditation on power, identity, and choice. Bioshock thrives on an atmosphere where atmosphere itself becomes a character—the hum of underwater corridors, the brittle glow of vintage lighting, the neon filaments of a city that has sacrificed humanity for a creed of “perfectibility.” Translating that sensorial layering to the big screen is a delicate balancing act: preserve the narrative densification and ethical paradoxes without dissolving them in spectacle. Del Toro’s visual vocabulary—a marriage of practical effects, sinuous creature design, and ornate set pieces—offers a natural fit for a world as tactile as Rapture. Yet he would insist that the heart of Bioshock lies not in its monsters or its biotechnical gothicism, but in the people who inhabit it and the choices that haunt them.
A recurring thread in del Toro’s public reflections is a reverence for cinema as a collective dream rather than a single-player journey. He has repeatedly spoken about his reverence for the collaborative energy of film—the way a script bleeds into production design, makeup, and score until it becomes something more than the sum of its parts. In the context of Bioshock, this means attending to the moral texture: the game’s father figures, the cults, the scientific hubris that spirals into ruin. Del Toro’s worldview emphasizes vulnerability as a core driver of horror and awe. A Bioshock film would likely lean into the fragility of its protagonists, the compromises they must navigate, and the price of ambition when the line between salvation and tyranny blurs.
Beyond the thematic challenges, there is a technical conversation about the language of adaptation. Bioshock’s interactivity—the player’s agency in shaping narrative outcomes—presents a paradox for a filmmaker: how to honor choice within a linear cinematic experience. Del Toro has often expressed respect for structure and form, recognizing that a film’s momentum depends on controlled pacing and a deliberate escalation of tension. The solution she imagines is not to replicate interactivity on screen but to reinterpret the spine of the story so that viewers feel the weight of consequences without feeling that their hands are on the levers. In this frame, the film would foreground moral ambiguity, letting characters wrestle with the ethical implications of their actions as the plot threads converge toward a resonant, irreversible endpoint.
Another dimension worth unpacking is the cinematic philosophy surrounding form and spectacle. Del Toro is known for his tactile creature artistry, a penchant for practical effects, and a devotion to tangible textures. In a Bioshock adaptation, one could anticipate a production design that revels in opulent decay: the gilded pull of a utopia that has forgotten what it once stood for, the eerie elegance of its underwater corridors, and the unsettling beauty of a world where science and ideology have fused into a cult of perfection. The visual storytelling would be complemented by a soundscape that oscillates between lullaby and siren, a sonic architecture designed to invade quiet moments with a sense of uncanny awe. This is not just world-building for its own sake; it is an invitation to consider how environments shape memory, fear, and choice.
Del Toro’s stance on directing video games as a medium reflects a broader argument about narrative sovereignty and the distinct languages of film and gameplay. He has suggested that the passions that drive him as a director—world-building, character-driven drama, and visual poetry—are deeply anchored in the cinematic tradition. Video games, with their interactive timelines and player-led revelations, offer a different kind of immersion—one where agency is the primary engine. The filmmaker’s task, in his view, is to cultivate emotional truth within a contained, authored experience. A Bioshock movie, then, becomes a meditation on what a story can reveal about fear, desire, and moral collapse when filtered through a director’s steady hand and a troupe of artisans dedicated to material truth.
The ethical terrain of Bioshock also resonates with del Toro’s longstanding concerns about power and responsibility. The game’s narratives critique utopian rhetoric and the corrosion that follows when intellectual hubris is pursued without accountability. A film adaptation would have the responsibility of translating that critique into a visual and narrative arc that respects the complexity of its source while offering new interpretive angles for audiences who may be approaching the story from different cultural vantage points. Del Toro’s sensitivity to political undertones, his love of myth, and his propensity to humanize villains would guide the project toward an examination of how communities justify expedience in the name of progress—and what it costs when the price is paid in lives and legitimacy.
In essence, a Bioshock movie under Guillermo del Toro would be less about re-creating a gaming experience and more about translating its core anxieties into a cinematic meditation on power, belief, and fallibility. It would likely be a film that earns its atmosphere through meticulous production design, a carefully orchestrated soundscape, and performances that illuminate the moral interiority of its characters. The director’s instinct would be to honor the philosophical stakes at the heart of the world—while allowing visitors to a movie theater to feel the same sense of awe and unease that players experience when they walk those aquamarine halls for the first time.
Ultimately, the question of whether del Toro would ever direct a video game remains less about capability and more about artistic objective. His body of work suggests a filmmaker who thrives in the form that grants him the greatest expressive latitude: cinema. A Bioshock adaptation would, by design, be an invitation to witness a universe through a singular, authorial lens—one that foregrounds character, atmosphere, and ethical complexity in ways that align with his distinctive approach to storytelling. In that sense, the conversation isn’t about whether he will or won’t make a video game; it’s about what it takes for a filmmaker to translate a cherished, intricate world into a cinematic experience that is both faithful to its origins and transformative in its own right.
