How Project Hail Mary Puts Lord and Miller’s Buddy Comedy Chops to The Test | IGN Fan Fest 2026

With their work on movies like 21 Jump Street, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and The Lego Batman Movie, Phil Lord and Chris Miller have proven they can take the “buddy comedy” dynamic in loads of different directions. Project Hail Mary, which centers on a scientist (Ryan Gosling) and a sentient rock-creature teaming up to save the universe, puts that strength to test, but at the end of the day, Lord and Miller are using a blend of practical effects, big special effects, and a heartwarming text from Andy Weir to ask a simple question with a lot of relevance to their canon: “can adult men make friends if the universe depends on it?”

Project Hail Mary is in theaters March 20th.
