Guns of Eschaton Hands-On Preview | Gamescom 2026
Guns of Eschaton is reinventing both the first-person shooter and the soulslike genre alike, all for the genre's most masochistic fans! In this hands-on gamescom 2026 preview, we experienced two hours of gunpowder-heavy FPS action, set in an apocalyptic Weird West designed by the late great Viktor Antonov (known for being the art director on Dishonored, Half-Life 2, Wolfenstein: The New Order, and now Guns of Eschaton). Despite an arduous demo and a never-ending array of horrors, Guns of Eschaton offers an entrancing yet brutal world that makes you want to "git gud".

The Gamescom 2026 floor was a showpiece for momentum-driven shooters, and Guns of Eschaton stood out as a title that seeks to redefine pace, precision, and player agency. This hands-on preview captures the core impressions from a live demo, highlighting what makes the experience feel fresh while outlining the questions that remain as developers move toward a broader release.
First impressions and presentation
From the moment the booth doors opened, Guns of Eschaton announced itself with a clean, cinematic aesthetic. The mechanical design of weapons, the tactile feedback of triggers, and the color grading of environments all contribute to a cohesive look and feel that balances realism with sci-fi flair. The game favors modular, tool-assisted combat rather than brute-force gunplay, inviting players to think in sequences that combine aim, timing, and resource management.
Gameplay loop and pacing
The core loop centers on short, high-stakes engagements punctuated by mid-combat decision points. Encounters are designed to reward planning and adaptability: players can switch between different loadouts on the fly, leveraging environmental hazards and AI behavior to create openings. Movement feels responsive but measured, encouraging deliberate positioning rather than reckless sprinting. The pacing shifts between sprinting firefights and quiet, tactical phases where scouting and gadget usage come to the fore.
Guns, gadgets, and system depth
Arsenal variety is one of the standout facets. Each weapon class offers distinct recoil patterns, damage profiles, and special secondary abilities that feel meaningful without being overpowering. The gadgetry—deployable cover, scanning drones, and temporal stutter devices—adds layers of strategy that extend beyond raw aiming skill. The systems are interconnected in a way that rewards experimentation: players who mix weapon types with gadget combos can exploit enemy patterns more effectively.
Aesthetics, audio, and feedback
Visual fidelity supports a grounded, near-future vibe. Lighting and particle effects emphasize critical moments—explosions flare with cinematic intensity, while subtle UI cues guide players toward optimal lines of attack. Audio design underpins the tactile feel of weapons and gadgets, with crisp hits, directional cues, and satisfying reloads that reinforce the sense of impact without overpowering the scene.
Technical notes from the demo
During the hands-on segment, performance remained smooth on the show floor hardware, with stable frame rates and responsive input handling. The developers showcased a series of small but meaningful quality-of-life improvements: intuitive weapon switching, clear feedback when a gadget is ready, and a HUD that prioritizes situational awareness without becoming visually noisy. Loadout customization appeared to be a central pillar, allowing players to tailor their approach to different mission scenarios.
What works well and areas to watch
What works well: - Strategic combat emphasis that rewards planning, not just reflexes. - Rich weapon and gadget variety with meaningful synergies. - Clear, responsive controls and well-considered feedback loops.
Potential areas to monitor: - Balancing across multiple loadouts to ensure no single build dominates. - Clarity of on-screen information during fast engagements to prevent cognitive overload. - Depth of progression and long-term customization to sustain engagement beyond the early missions.
Impact and expectations moving forward
Guns of Eschaton at Gamescom demonstrates a confident approach to a military-sci-fi shooter that values strategy and resource management alongside precision shooting. If the development team maintains the momentum—refining balance, fleshing out progression, and expanding environmental variety—the game could carve out a distinctive niche among contemporary shooters. The hands-on impression is that Guns of Eschaton has the potential to deliver a compelling, tightly designed experience that rewards patient play and thoughtful gadget usage while still delivering the adrenaline of high-stakes combat.
Conclusion
The preview rounds me out with cautious optimism. Guns of Eschaton presents a playable fantasy where players orchestrate complex encounters through careful weapon selection, gadget timing, and environmental awareness. As the project approaches its final stages, the key will be sustaining the clarity of its systems and ensuring that the pace remains engaging across a broader spectrum of missions and modes.
