Tides of Annihilation: How to Use Knights to Kill EVERYTHING | gamescom 2026
Tides of Annihilation is the all-new Action RPG title from brand new Chinese studio: Eclipse Glow Games. You play Gwendolyn, a survivor of the calamity that left London in ruins, as you battle with foes from beyond! The combat for Tides of Annihilation is looks very intriguing, as Gwendolyn summons a variety of knights to fight for her, each with their own unique abilities. We caught up with Game Director Ary Chen to drill down deep into combat and progression.
Tides of Annihilation is coming soon to PlayStation 5 (PS5), PC (Steam), and Xbox Series X|S.
At gamescom 2026, a sweeping perspective on strategy and combat design took center stage as developers unveiled a bold, if controversial, approach to battlefield dominance: using knights to overwhelm and annihilate every adversary. The presentation blended historical resonance with modern game design, offering a framework for players who crave order, tempo, and decisive execution on the digital stage.
The central thesis was simple in form but elaborate in execution: knights, traditionally the backbone of medieval warfare, can serve as a fulcrum for a player’s entire battlefield strategy. Rather than relegating cavalry to flanking roles or high-risk breakout moves, the designers demonstrated a system where knight units act as force multipliers—combining speed, charge, and reinforcement in ways that compress the battlefield into a narrowing funnel of inevitability.
Key mechanics highlighted included: - Charge Momentum: Knights accrue momentum through open terrain and cleared routes, unlocking devastating breakthrough abilities that can crack pillars of enemy lines. - Cohesive Formations: The game rewards disciplined unit alignment. Properly maintained formations unlock synergy bonuses, granting enhanced morale, reduced fatigue, and amplified lethal output. - Heroic Synergy: Knights serve as conduits for special abilities tied to a hero unit or core commander. The synergy creates a cascade effect: a single well-placed knight charge can trigger chain reactions across allied lines. - Terrain as Tactics: The maps showcased varied topography—hillside approaches, river crossings, and fortified gates—that players could leverage to force engagements on terms favorable to knight-driven assaults.
From a design perspective, the emphasis on knights as a primary instrument of victory raises thoughtful questions about pacing, balance, and player agency. To maintain fair competition, the developers outlined a multi-layered balancing approach: - Counterplay Depth: While knights can initiate crushing offensives, opponents have viable counters—precise artillery windows, fortified positions, and specialized units designed to disrupt charge momentum. - Strategic Fatigue: Prolonged engagements test resource management and fatigue. Players must rotate forces, conserve stamina, and avoid attritional warfare that risks long, unsatisfying stalemates. - Visual Clarity: Ensuring that the knight’s impact is legible on screen is a core priority. Clear feedbacks—sound cues, post-impact camera shifts, and dynamic ground effects—help players read the battlefield and optimize their moves.
The narrative framing at gamescom 2026 positions knights not merely as military units but as symbolic conductors of strategic tempo. The idea is to create experiences where well-timed knight actions compress options for the opposing side, forcing decisive conclusions rather than protracted attrition battles. In practice, this translates to moments of high tension that escalate into dramatic, cinematic finishes—combat sequences that feel consequential and tightly controlled.
For players and scholars of game design alike, the discussion invites a broader consideration of how classical archetypes translate into modern interactive systems. Knights, with their storied heritage, can be reinterpreted as engines of momentum, their value predicated on timing, route selection, and the psychology of pressure. When implemented with careful balance and transparent feedback, such a design can deliver both spectacle and satisfaction—an engaging reminder that strategic mastery often hinges on one well-executed, even elegant, decision.
In the weeks following the event, impressions from attendees and developers alike converged on a shared takeaway: the most compelling simulations are those that respect their historical roots while embracing systemic innovations that empower players to express creativity within structured constraints. If gamescom 2026 is any indicator, knights may rise again—not merely as relics of a bygone era, but as strategic accelerants capable of shaping entire campaigns and redefining what it means to lead and win on the digital battlefield.
