Saros: How to Defeat Bastion (Second Boss Guide)
Bastion serves as the formidable gatekeeper of the Ancient Depths, and while this stationary sentinel might seem simple at first, its grid-based attacks and area lockdowns can quickly overwhelm an unprepared player. To survive this encounter, you'll need to ditch your close-range shotguns in favor of rifles or handcannons and master the use of the arena's jump pads. This guide breaks down how to navigate the boss's lethal beam patterns and which Power Weapons, like Prominence or Dispiritor, will give you the edge at medium range.
We also dive into the transition phases, showing you the most efficient way to clear out turrets and recharge your resources before the intensity ramps up. Learn how to manage the "Shield Amplifier" trade-offs when absorbing yellow orbs and how to position yourself at the back of the arena to maximize your reaction time against Bastion's final phase lockdown. Stay tuned after the breakdown for a full, unedited successful run against Bastion to see these strategies in action on Carcosa.

In the evolving landscape of Saros, Bastion stands as a testament to boss design that rewards observation and precision. This guide provides a structured approach to mastering Bastion, focusing on attack patterns, phase transitions, and reliable counters to help you triumph with consistency.
Overview - Bastion is the second major encounter, serving as a bridge between early-game practice and more complex later bosses. Expect a mix of ranged and melee telegraphs, segmented phases, and a handful of survivability tests. - The fight emphasizes movement economy, rhythm matching, and smart resource management. Understanding the boss’s timing is more valuable than sheer damage output.
Preparation and Loadout - Weapons: Choose a balanced setup that allows quick DPS bursts and reliable ranged damage when you’re forced to reposition. An option with a controllable projectile or a short cooldown burst can be advantageous. - Armor and Stats: Prioritize sustain and mobility. Moderate defense with a focus on stamina or energy regeneration helps you stay in the fight longer without overcommitting to any single phase. - consumables: Bring basic healing items and a cooldown reset if available. A single-use mobility tool can turn a risky phase into a controlled sequence.
Battle Strategy 1) Opening Phase — Read and React - Bastion typically opens with a warning telegraph: a sweeping beam or ground pulse. Do not dodge blindly; instead, move perpendicular to the cast line to minimize exposure. - After the initial attack, Bastion may pause, signaling a window for your opening salvo. Use this moment to land clean hits before the next cycle starts. - Tip: Maintain a steady pace rather than sprinting for DPS. Consistency reduces the risk of getting overwhelmed by follow-up mechanics.
2) Mid-Fight Patterns — Layered Threats - The boss introduces auxiliary adds or segmented barriers. Focus on prioritizing the adds that close gaps in your defense or amplify damage if left unchecked. - Movement becomes more intricate. Expect brief, directional telegraphs; pre-aim your next position so you can chain between safe zones without losing DPS uptime. - Resource management is critical. If your cooldowns are near use, time them with the most disruptive phase to maximize value.
3) Phase Transitions — The Turning Point - Bastion usually cycles into a multi-phase sequence where the arena changes or additional hazards activate. Treat these as resets that reward precise execution rather than frantic button mashing. - When the arena shifts, immediately reassess safe zones and attack windows. A calm, calculated rotation can net you a clean phase completion and set up for the final stretch.
4) Final Phase — Close the Gap - In the last stretch, Bastion intensifies attack cadence. Your goal is to suppress downtime between attacks with tight dodges and well-timed counterstrikes. - If available, deploy high-damage windows during the few moments Bastion exposes a vulnerable gap. Keep a reserve of healing items and a mobility tool in case you misjudge a telegraph.
Positioning and Dodging Essentials - Always aim to keep a small safe zone to one side of Bastion’s attack line. This allows rapid repositioning as new mechanics appear. - Learn the arc and travel time of the boss’s major moves. A tentative dodge early is better than a late, high-damage roll. - Use environmental features (cover, ledges, or pillars) to disrupt line-of-sight for add spawns or to funnel them into narrow chokepoints.
Execution Checklist - Read the first two telegraphs before engaging: threat direction and whether it’s a warning or an active attack. - Maintain at least one prepared heal or shield when approaching phase changes. - Favor steady, high-precision strikes over frantic, high-damage bursts. - Adjust your positioning after every major attack to keep the next dash or beam within your planable margins.
Common Mistakes to Avoid - Underestimating the setup phase: naive dodges can cascade into a failed sequence. - Overextending during burst windows: it’s better to salvage a few extra hits than to risk a catastrophic dodge. - Ignoring adds: clearing auxiliary threats early reduces noise and increases your overall survivability.
Conclusion Bastion rewards players who approach with preparation and poise. By aligning your dodges to the telegraphs, sequencing your cooldowns with phase changes, and maintaining disciplined positioning, you can turn the second boss into a showcase of strategic execution. While each attempt can reveal new nuances, the core of the fight remains consistent: read the signs, guard your flanks, and strike during the inevitable windows of vulnerability.
