Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Reminded Me of Its Best-in-Class Combat, But It Needs to Stay Focused
My hands-on time was pretty overwhelming with exploration through piloting the Highwind, skydiving from the deck onto any open region, and learning how to play as Cid and Vincent before my time had run out. I also got a glimpse of how the story kicks off in Wutai, which has been expanded from the original. The predominant feeling I came away with, however, is that maybe Revelation is getting carried away with stuffing its world with side content for the sake of it. Perhaps that's a symptom of trying to pack as much as possible in an hour-long demo window, but at least I know that Revelation seems to be upholding FF7's title as having my absolute favorite action RPG combat to date. Final Fantasy 7 has always balanced a delicate mix of storytelling and combat, and the latest Revelation chapter reinforces that balance with a reminder of what the series does best: fast-paced, strategic brawls that reward timing, planning, and character synergy. What shines through in this installment is not a radical overhaul, but a reaffirmation of core combat design that longtime fans have come to admire.
At its best, Final Fantasy 7’s combat system blends urgency with depth. You’re not just mashing buttons or waiting for cooldowns to expire; you’re choreographing a sequence where character abilities, enemy weaknesses, and environmental clues come together in real time. Revelation emphasizes this equilibrium—introducing new tools and refinements without diluting the pace or making the arena feel overbearing. The result is a fight system that remains accessible to newcomers while offering meaningful complexity for veterans who want to squeeze every ounce of potential from each encounter.
One of the standout aspects is the way party composition and skill diversity shape encounters. With a roster of options that encourage experimentation, players are nudged toward building synergies rather than relying on a single, overused tactic. This is where the game’s design philosophy really shines: combat should feel like a chess match where each move has visible consequences, and Revelation delivers that sensation through crisp inputs, readable enemy tells, and satisfying feedback on successful strategy execution.
A lingering concern, however, is the risk of mission drift. As the narrative advances and the stakes rise, there is a delicate line between expanding the combat toolkit and losing focus on the central pacing that keeps battles engaging. The strongest moments arrive when the game hones in on concise, high-stakes skirmishes that test your planning under pressure. When the rhythm wanders into longer, less purposeful engagements, the sense of momentum can waver. The developers should remain vigilant about preserving tempo: quick, purposeful fights that reward thoughtful setup and precise execution.
Story integration remains another critical touchstone. The best FF7 moments seamlessly weave character development with battle dynamics, turning combat into a narrative beat rather than a mere mechanical hurdle. Revelation succeeds when encounters feel earned—where the environment, the boss’s tactics, and the party’s emotional drive converge to elevate the moment beyond a mere clash of numbers. When the action starts to feel detached from character arcs, the experience risks becoming procedural rather than memorable.
Visually and audibly, the combat experience is sustained by a confident design language. Animations are crisp, cues are readable, and the audio palette mirrors the stakes of each skirmish. This cohesion is essential for maintaining the sense that every encounter matters and that your decisions carry weight in a world where every choice has consequences.
Looking ahead, the path to maintaining excellence in combat is clear. The core system benefits from iterative refinements that preserve speed, accessibility, and strategic depth. Small, thoughtful adjustments—such as tightening input windows, clarifying status effects, and ensuring reward curves scale with player investment—can make a significant difference without compromising the identity of the game.
In sum, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation reaffirms the franchise’s reputation for best-in-class combat. It demonstrates that strong action systems are not merely about flashy sequences but about the silent mathematics of strategy and timing. If the development team can keep the focus sharp—hone the pacing, deepen meaningful choices, and keep fights narratively earned—the title has the potential to stand alongside the series’ most celebrated entries as a benchmark for action-oriented JRPG combat.
