Control: Resonant – PlayStation 5 vs PS5 Pro Graphics Comparison
What are are the differences between Control Resonant’s graphics modes on the PlayStation 5 and the PS5 Pro?
Starting off with the base PS5 you’ve got the choice of your standard performance and quality modes. Performance has the game running at a native lower fidelity that’s upscaled to 1440p but runs at a pretty solid target 60fps. Quality mode, on the other hand looks great, but comes at a cost a target frame rate of 30, and an upscaled output to 4k.
The PlayStation 5 pro unlocks the game a bit more and offers three graphics modes that all output at an upscaled 4K resolution thanks to PSSR.
Quality looks the best with hardware enables ray tracing, a sharp image, and a much more noticeable visual fidelity across the board. BUT you can’t have everything because it’s locked at a target 30fps.
Performance offers a lower fidelity and no ray tracing but It runs at 60fps. Balanced is a mode I hope we see more often as it has improved visuals like quality mode, but squeezes out a few more frames per second. The only caveat is that you need a 120hz monitor to activate it.
Regardless of what you choose, Control Resonant looks as good as it plays. Narrated by Nick Maillet.
Control: Resonant – PlayStation 5 vs PS5 Pro Graphics Comparison

In the realm of contemporary gaming, few titles manage to blend atmospheric storytelling with technical ambition as decisively as Control. As players push deeper into the Federal Bureau of Control, the interplay between lighting, texture fidelity, and environmental scale becomes not just a matter of aesthetics, but a measure of how convincingly a world can feel alive. This comparison examines the visual differences and the resulting impact on immersion when navigating Control on two Sony flagship platforms: PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro.
Platform architecture and rendering philosophy Control leverages the Northlight engine to render a world that thrives on dynamic lighting, volumetric fog, and complex post-processing. On both PS5 and PS5 Pro, the game benefits from a fast SSD, a capable Ray Tracing stack, and the console-specific enhancements that elevate texture streaming and frame pacing. The core rendering pipeline remains consistent across platforms, yet the PS5 Pro introduces refinements to draw distance, texture resolution, and, critically, internal rendering budgets dedicated to render scalability features such as ray-traced reflections and global illumination.
Resolution, frame rate, and upscaling strategies The standard PS5 targets a steady performance mode with a locked or near-locked frame rate to preserve motion clarity during fast-paced action and puzzle-solving sequences. In contrast, PS5 Pro unlocks a higher ceiling for resolution and stability, often trading some performance headroom for crisper visuals. When the mode switches to a more pixel-dense presentation, the Pro version reduces aliasing and increases detail in distant geometry, letting the Bureau’s corridors and the Research Wing feel more tangible at the same in-game distance.
Texture fidelity and material realism Texture streaming on both platforms benefits from the PS5’s solid-state storage, but the PS5 Pro can sustain a higher mip-level detail at distances that previously showed muddiness. Surface materials—polished metal, wet concrete, and carved stone—exhibit subtle micro-roughness and specular variance that respond more accurately to light sources in Pro, especially in rooms with harsh fluorescent lighting or ambient glow from occult artifacts. In practice, this results in a more convincing tactile sense of the environment during exploration and confrontations with halted processes or corrupted entries.
Ray tracing and reflections Control’s environmental storytelling often hinges on reflective surfaces—glass partitions, lacquered desks, and rain-slicked floors that mirror the distorted, otherworldly ambience of the Bureau. The PS5 Pro carries an enhanced ray tracing budget that improves reflection fidelity and reduces puddle culling artifacts in crowded interiors. While the standard PS5 delivers compelling reflections that support atmosphere, the Pro iteration offers crisper, more accurate reflections on complex surfaces, contributing to a deeper sense of immersion during pivotal moments.
Lighting, fog, and atmospheric effects Volumetric lighting and environmental fog are central to Control’s mood, casting long shadows and sculpting spaces with a sense of foreboding. On PS5 Pro, the lighting pipeline has more room to breathe, enabling finer control over bloom, fog density, and light scattering through translucent materials. Players are likely to notice a more consistent silhouette when moving through dimly lit stairwells and vast atriums, where subtle shifts in light direction can reveal hidden details in the architecture.
Performance considerations and user experience Performance mode on PS5 emphasizes stable frame pacing with a solid target frame rate, ensuring responsive input and fluid camera work during combat and navigation. PS5 Pro, with its elevated capabilities, tends to push toward higher internal rendering resolutions and more aggressive texture detail, which can result in occasional frame pacing trade-offs during peak scene complexity. The practical takeaway is that Pro users may enjoy a more cinematic presentation at the expense of occasional, barely perceptible dips in frame consistency in the most textured sequences.
Practical recommendations for players – If you prioritize crisp, immersive visuals and longer viewing distances in expansive interiors, PS5 Pro is the better choice for Control’s resonant environments. – If you value maximum frame stability and consistent responsiveness during rapid encounters, standard PS5 remains a strong, reliable option without compromising core gameplay feel. – Consider enabling optional settings that emphasize texture detail and ray-traced reflections on Pro, while keeping a balanced performance profile to avoid micro-stutter in highly dynamic scenes.
Conclusion Control on PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro demonstrates how iterative hardware improvements can refine a game’s atmospheric language without altering its narrative core. The PS5 Pro elevates the presentation with higher detail, more precise reflections, and nuanced lighting that deepen immersion in the Bureau’s uncanny labyrinth. Yet, the standard PS5 continues to deliver a compelling, faithful experience that captures the game’s resonant mood, ensuring that the shadowy corridors of the Federal Bureau of Control remain an arresting canvas on both platforms.
