Will A24’s Elden Ring Be The ‘Batman Begins’ of Video Game Movies? - Beyond Clips
Okay, stupid headline, but really: at what point will video game movies go from being just popcorn adaptations of an upstart medium to serious works of cinema? Up until Christopher Nolan came along, Batman movies were generally pretty goofy, but Batman Begins led to The Dark Knight, which clearly respected its source material and audience. Alex Garland is currently shooting A24’s Elden Ring movie, and based on his track record, it could very well do something similar. Meanwhile, Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil isn’t winning over die-hard fans quite yet, but considering his track record and love of the games, maybe we should give him a chance?

The video game-to-film adaptation landscape has long struggled to find a foothold that resonates with both hardcore fans and casual viewers. Yet recent conversations around A24’s Elden Ring project suggest a potential turning point: could this be the Batman Begins moment that redefines how we translate interactive worlds into cinematic storytelling? While concrete details remain scarce, the discourse surrounding the project offers several compelling throughlines worth examining.
A24’s brand has become synonymous with bold, auteur-driven cinema that mingles artistry with accessibility. That positioning matters for a video game adaptation because it signals a readiness to treat source material with seriousness, nuance, and cinematic ambition rather than leaning on nostalgia or spectacle alone. Elden Ring, a game celebrated for its expansive world-building, intricate lore, and punishing yet rewarding gameplay, presents a unique translation challenge: how to preserve the experiential core—discovery, risk, and personal pace—within a feature-length narrative structure.
The Batman Begins parallel rests on a few critical pillars. First, the film reimagined a darker, more grounded take on a well-known character, balancing mythic elements with character-driven storytelling. Second, it established a credible tonal benchmark for superhero cinema, one that prioritized grounded realism over unbridled gadgetry. Third, it demonstrated that origin stories can serve as powerful springboards for broader franchises without sacrificing coherence or emotional texture.
Applied to Elden Ring, these pillars suggest a pathway for a successful adaptation that avoids common pitfalls: overreliance on spectacle, or conversely, an insular, lore-heavy approach that alienates newcomers. A24’s approach could entail the following strategic directions:
- Tonal Grounding: Root the narrative in a character’s personal quest, ethics, and consequences, even within a sprawling fantasy setting. A grounded emotional through-line can anchor the film for audiences unfamiliar with the game’s lore while offering meaningful arcs for existing fans. - Thematic Focus: Center the story on themes such as endurance, discovery, and the ambiguity of power. Elden Ring’s world invites existential questions about fate, agency, and the burden of choice—elements that translate well into a cinematic arc when expressed through character decisions and relationships. - World-Building as character Context: Instead of expository lore dumps, reveal the Elden Ring universe through decisive scenes, environment storytelling, and character-driven interactions. This approach can preserve the game’s sense of mystery while delivering a cohesive and cinematic experience. - Pacing and Structure: Embrace a modular narrative that weaves individual quest-like sequences into a larger, emotionally satisfying journey. A24’s storytelling sensibilities can support interwoven storylines that culminate in a clear, resonant climax without sacrificing tempo. - Visual and Audio Signature: Leveraging a distinct directorial voice, production design, and score can evoke the game’s atmosphere in a way that feels cinematic and original, rather than merely a retread of familiar fantasy or action tropes.
However, there are risks inherent to this ambitious translation. Elden Ring’s appeal lies in its player agency, emergent gameplay, and the sense that meaning is personally negotiated. Translating that interactive experience into a linear narrative risks flattening the player’s sense of discovery. The challenge, then, is to craft a story that preserves the game’s spirit—its sense of peril, mystery, and discovery—while offering a complete, standalone cinematic arc.
From a market perspective, A24’s involvement signals an intention to tilt toward a film that can stand on its own, rather than a souped-up adaptation designed primarily to sell game merchandise or ride the momentum of the title’s release. This commitment to auteur-driven craft can help attract cinephiles and general audiences alike, expanding Elden Ring’s cultural footprint beyond gaming circles. If executed with discipline, the project could also become a template for future game adaptations that aim for higher artistic ambition without forsaking accessibility.
Fans will rightly scrutinize casting, design language, and the degree to which the film honors the game’s lore while offering a fresh vantage point. Successful cross-pollination will require a collaborative dialogue between beloved source material and fearless storytelling that respects both the fans’ investment and new viewers’ needs. In this regard, Elden Ring’s cinematic potential hinges on a storyteller who can balance fidelity with invention—the hallmark of a project that could redefine what a video game adaptation can aspire to achieve.
In sum, the question of whether A24’s Elden Ring becomes the Batman Begins of video game movies hinges on a delicate balance: honoring the game’s distinctive voice while delivering a robust, standalone cinematic experience. If the adaptation leans into tonal seriousness, thematically rich storytelling, and disciplined world-building, it may not only justify the studio’s faith but also signal a broader shift in the industry’s willingness to treat game properties as fertile ground for ambitious, original cinema.
