Nintendo Switch Sports Resort Hands-On Preview: Wuhu Island Is Back, Baby | Comic Con 2026
IGN and Nintendo Voice Chat's Logan Plant went hands-on with Nintendo Switch Sports Resort at San Diego Comic Con, and he's here with Brian Altano to share his impressions. We tried four sports: power cruising, archery, the new thumb wrestling, and the iconic 100-pin bowling, and found that each had us holding the Joy-Con 2 controllers in a different way. Plus, we talk about how it felt returning to Wuhu Island from the 2009 original. Nintendo Switch Sports launches on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 22.

The buzz arrived early this year as Comic Con 2026 opened its doors to a wave of fans eager for a fresh look at Nintendo’s latest leap into the sports-and-stay-play genre on the Switch. The spotlight centered on Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, a title that instantly conjures memories of sun-soaked vacations, inviting beaches, and the comforting rhythm of friendly competition. In a hands-on preview session, attendees were treated to a first encounter with a game that aims to blend accessible party-game fun with the depth and polish that long-time Nintendo fans have come to expect.
A bright, buoyant presentation style frames the experience from the moment the game boots. The screen invites players to segment their adventure into two core modes: on-site mini-games designed for local couch play and a broader Resort itinerary that upscales into a weekend-like campaign of challenges, competitions, and cooperative quests. The architecture leans into Nintendo’s familiar “easy to pick up, hard to master” ethos, ensuring newcomers won’t feel overwhelmed yet offering enough nuance to reward persistent players.
Wuhu Island returns as the centerpiece, reimagined with modern visuals that balance nostalgia with new life. The island’s iconic lagoons, rolling greens, and palm-shaded paths feel faithful to the original charm while benefitting from contemporary particle effects, more robust textures, and smoother animations. The aesthetic upgrade is more than cosmetic; it enhances the sense of place, turning each venue into an inviting stage for both friendly competition and lighthearted exploration.
Gameplay pacing is deliberately brisk. The mini-games span a spectrum of familiar party staples—arcade-style sports challenges, precision-based tasks, and motion-centric feats—while integrating subtle tweaks that keep the experience fresh. Controls feel intuitive, leveraging the Switch’s motion sensors and button inputs with a gentle emphasis on accessibility. In this preview, the motion tracking proves reliable, with responsive steering, accurate tilt detection, and a satisfying sense of weight to actions like swing and glide. The haptic feedback further reinforces action cues, delivering a tactile layer that enhances immersion without becoming distracting.
One notable evolution is the integration of cooperative and competitive modes into a shared, island-wide progression system. Players can form a resort crew to tackle a rotating calendar of events, earning rewards that unlock cosmetic options, new courses, and seasonal weather effects that alter the terrain layout. This connective thread encourages longer play sessions, mirroring real-world resort experiences where variety and momentum matter as much as skill.
Content-wise, the preview hints at a balanced lineup. Traditional sports-inspired challenges sit alongside whimsical activities designed to leverage the Switch’s portability. For families and casual players, there’s reassurance in the clear scoring, forgiving margins for error, and the option to dial up assistance for younger or newer participants. For more competitive crowds, advanced difficulties and time trials offer the bite needed to sustain interest beyond first contact.
From a design perspective, the game demonstrates thoughtful level design. Each venue on Wuhu Island is crafted to maximize fun within short, repeatable play sessions. The courses encourage social interaction, with mechanics that reward cooperation in team modes and playful tactics in versus formats. The audiovisual package reinforces the tropical vibe: upbeat music, cheerful sound effects, and vibrant, sun-drenched color palettes that communicate energy and warmth without sacrificing legibility during fast-paced moments.
Performance appears stable in the hands-on portion, with smooth frame rates and responsive input across multiple play setups. The user interface remains clean and approachable, guiding players through the portal to friends’ sessions, local co-op parties, and online matchmaking. While early in development, the build shown at Comic Con 2026 reflects Nintendo’s proficiency at delivering a product that feels polished and ready for a broad audience.
In terms of market positioning, Nintendo Switch Sports Resort seems to stride confidently between party-friendly accessibility and enduring Nintendo credibility. It invites casual evenings with family and friends while still offering enough depth to satisfy players who crave consistency, rhythm, and repeatable fun. The island setting, coupled with a looping progression system and a rotating event calendar, positions the title as a potential staple for weekend game nights and vacation downtime alike.
Bottom line: Wuhu Island is back in a form that respects its breezy roots while embracing modern conveniences. Nintendo Switch Sports Resort appears poised to extend the Switch’s reputation for inclusive, high-spirited multiplayer experiences. As the Comic Con hands-on session demonstrated, the game captures the essence of resort-style leisure—easy to enter, steadily engaging, and encouraging friends and family to join in the fun again and again.
