Jurassic Park (Genesis) Playthrough

A playthrough of Sega’s 1993 license-based action-platformer for the Sega Genesis, Jurassic Park.

I played both campaigns for this video. Grant’s game begins at 0:34, and the raptor’s begins at 26:58.

Jurassic Park was one of those crazy pop-culture phenoms that had a seemingly endless reach, a fact that’s made abundantly clear by the sheer volume of video games that were made to cash in on the hype. Between 1993 and 1994, there were no fewer than twelve (!) officially licensed JP games released for the dedicated gaming platforms.

The first Genesis game wasn’t the best of them, but it was arguably the best known and most beloved of the bunch. Sega spent an ungodly sum promoting it, it was plastered across magazine covers and store displays everywhere you went, it was virtually impossible to find in-stock copies at the video store that summer, and it sat on the best-seller lists for months. Everything about it was just so damned cool. 90s cool. Sega cool.

I mean, how awesome was it when you turned the game on for the first time and the T. Rex roared "SEGA!" at you? It also didn’t hurt that the dinosaurs looked like the ones in the movie. What I remember the most about the excitement surrounding the game, though, was that it let you play as the raptor. Who would want to be Dr. Grant when you could maul and eat people as a leathery, prehistoric wrecking ball on legs? (Not that Grant was a bad choice. The raptor didn’t get a rocket launcher!)

The game being split into two campaigns was a fun and innovative touch (though it seems obvious in hindsight that it was an attempt to stretch things out), and the nonstop violence was proof that Sega knew their audience well. It was light on content and heavy on jank, but Jurassic Park for the Genesis was the right game at the right time, and in its moment, it was a true superstar.
