Halo: Campaign Evolved Review
Halo: Campaign Evolved reviewed by Michael Higham on PC, also available on Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5.
It's no secret that Halo: Campaign Evolved is a test run for developer Halo Studios and its future using the Unreal Engine, and from that perspective, it makes sense why this is a pretty slim package that retreads well-worn territory. The fact that I still had a blast revisiting the original Halo story in 2026 speaks to its timelessness, however, and the gunplay that revolutionized first-person console games and co-op multiplayer make it worth playing today. But that's largely a credit to Halo in general, and not necessarily Campaign Evolved, specifically. The new prequel missions are a fun couple of hours of usual Halo fare, and the elevation in technical detail with UE5 and the subtle tweaks in the older missions are nice to see. But I don't think they're transformative in a way that makes a significant difference to what's been great about Halo even two-something decades later. With the Master Chief Collection right there, which also has the robust multiplayer suite, Campaign Evolved is mostly a shiny trip down memory lane.
The Halo franchise has long stood as a benchmark for first-person shooters, balancing expansive sci-fi storytelling with tight, sentinel-like gunplay. Halo: Campaign Evolved enters this lineage with a mission to refine what fans already love while reimagining portions of the campaign to meet modern standards of pacing, accessibility, and narrative clarity. The result is a campaign experience that respects its roots while presenting meaningful evolutions in design, scope, and technical execution.
From the opening moments, Campaign Evolved signals a readiness to bridge generations. The core objective remains the same: light the path through a galaxy-wide struggle, confront ancient mysteries, and protect humanity from threats both familiar and new. Yet the pacing has been recalibrated to favor momentum without sacrificing moments of awe or contemplation. The campaign frequently transitions from high-octane set-pieces to quieter, more character-driven beats, allowing players to absorb the consequences of their actions and the scale of the conflict.
A key strength of this evolution is the refinement of traversal and combat flow. The Halo suite has always rewarded strategic thinking: engage with cover, manage resources, and leverage the battlefield’s geography. In Campaign Evolved, these principles are sharpened. Movement feels more responsive, tools and weapons are introduced with better context, and enemy archetypes are arranged to encourage adaptive playstyles. This creates a rhythm where players can explore different routes, tactics, and weapon combinations without losing sight of the mission’s spine.
Narratively, Campaign Evolved leans into universe-building that honors established lore while inviting newcomers to step aboard with minimal friction. The central conflict is expressed through character-driven stakes and larger symbolic questions about autonomy, sacrifice, and resilience in wartime. The writing aims for clarity without oversimplification, delivering moments of humor, gravitas, and surprise that integrate smoothly with the broader Halo canon.
The level design is one of the campaign’s most notable improvements. Structures are more cohesive, with landmark sequences that feel memorable and replayable. Visual storytelling—environmental cues, signage, and encounter pacing—adds depth to the world without heavy-handed exposition. While grandeur remains a defining feature, there is a renewed emphasis on intimate spaces and personal moments that remind players that the war is fought by individuals who carry the weight of their choices.
Technical execution holds up admirably across platforms, with thoughtful optimization and attention to detail. Visuals balance fidelity and performance, achieving a cinematic feel without compromising responsiveness. Sound design, including a reworked score and tactile weapon feedback, anchors action in a way that heightens immersion. The campaign’s soundtrack often swells at pivotal junctures and retreats to sonic subtleties during exploration, illustrating a well-crafted auditory arc that mirrors the narrative cadence.
Accessibility and options have also been expanded. New difficulty tunings, streamlined help systems, and quality-of-life improvements aim to lower barriers to entry while preserving depth for seasoned players. These choices reflect a broader industry trend toward inclusive design, ensuring that the Halo experience remains approachable without diluting its challenge or identity.
Cooperative and multiplayer considerations remain integral to the Halo experience, and Campaign Evolved thoughtfully supports shared play. Co-op missions are balanced to accommodate varied player counts, with pacing and level design that reward teamwork and coordination. The campaign’s evolution does not come at the expense of its multiplayer ecosystem; rather, it reinforces Halo’s core promise: a robust, communal arena where strategy, skill, and camaraderie converge.
In sum, Halo: Campaign Evolved stands as a testament to thoughtful iteration. It honors the legacy of a storied franchise while pushing the narrative, design, and technical boundaries forward. For veterans, it offers refined mechanics and meaningful expansions that deepen the Halo mythos. For newcomers, it provides a welcoming entry point that preserves the magic of the original while presenting a crisp, contemporary experience. The result is not a rehash, but a rejuvenation—an evolution that respects the past even as it charts a confident course into the future.
