Onimusha: Way of the Sword Review
Onimusha: Way of the Sword reviewed by Will Borger on PS5, also available on Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, and Switch 2.
"It’s a testament to Onimusha: Way of the Sword’s combat that I could beat it without using some of the systems designed to help you progress – not because you don’t need them, but because it leaves room for you to truly understand its action and overcome their absence through sheer determination. Even if I hadn’t intentionally made things harder for myself, though, I still would have loved spending time with the charismatic denizens of this world, all of whom are as well acted as they are animated. I still would have thought that Musashi himself was one of the coolest, most interesting protagonists in any video game, and I would have loved going on this journey with him. I still would have savored the creative fights against dozens of impressive bosses. My journey reflected Musashi's, and Onimusha made that possible. The best part of life is the challenge. You have to learn to love the fight."

Onimusha: Way of the Sword arrives as a refreshed entry in the enduring Onimusha franchise, combining robust action mechanics with a refined presentation that respects its legacy while appealing to contemporary players. The result is a balanced blend of swordplay, exploration, and strategic combat that can stand on its own merits even for those revisiting the series after a long hiatus.
From the opening moments, Way of the Sword situates players in a vividly realized Sengoku-era setting, where pristine environments and period-accurate aesthetics establish an atmosphere that is both immersive and visually striking. The game’s art direction leans into a cinematic reverence for its source material, delivering detailed character models, atmospheric lighting, and carefully composed cutscenes that drive the narrative forward without feeling intrusive.
The core of the experience rests on its combat loop, which emphasizes timing, positioning, and resource management. Players are rewarded for reading enemy tells, executing well-timed parries, and chaining combos into devastating follow-ups. The swordplay feels weighty and deliberate, with each strike conveying impact that is both satisfying and tactically meaningful. A well-designed stamina system ensures that even as players string together impressive sequences, there is a finite pace to battles that demands discipline and planning.
Progression is thoughtfully structured around a mix of skill upgrades, equipment choices, and collectible insights that deepen engagement without overwhelming the player. Upgrades enhance core attributes and unlock new techniques, while weapon variants offer different risk-reward dynamics. This layered progression invites experimentation, encouraging players to tailor their approach to each encounter and enemy type.
The game’s pacing excels in its balance between exploration and corridor-driven action. While some sections reward careful navigation of the environment, others push players into focused combat arenas where rapid decision-making is paramount. Environmental design frequently leverages vertical space, obstacles, and terrain advantages to enrich combat strategy, making engagements feel dynamic rather than repetitive.
Narratively, Way of the Sword delivers a concise, character-driven arc that honors the franchise’s mythos. Stakes feel personal, and the storytelling cadence maintains momentum between set-piece battles and quieter moments of reflection. The voice acting and sound design contribute to a cohesive tone, with a score that underscores the emotional beats without overpowering dialogue or action.
On the technical front, performance remains smooth across typical play sessions, with responsive controls and minimal latency in online or otherwise networked modes. Visual fidelity is strong, showcasing textural detail, fluid animations, and cinematic camera work that enhances immersion during scripted sequences and boss encounters alike.
In terms of content cadence, the title respects player time by delivering meaningful encounters without excessive filler. Side activities are well-integrated into the core loop, offering optional lore, challenges, and rewards that feel purposeful rather than gratuitous. This approach keeps replayability high while preserving a tight, focused overall experience.
In summary, Onimusha: Way of the Sword stands as a polished return to a storied franchise. It respects its roots through a deliberate combat system, respectful homage to historical settings, and a narrative that complements the gameplay pace. For fans of classic action-adventure games and newcomers seeking a well-crafted sword combat experience, Way of the Sword offers a compelling, satisfying journey through a world where skill, timing, and strategy prevail.
