Enjoy Game Stores While They Last
There will never be a babysitter as good as an EB Games in the mall. When I was a kid, my parents would just drop me there for 3 hours and I’d happily spend the entire time reading the back of game cases.
But things are different now. Xbox Gamepass, live service games, and the disappearance of physical media have really hurt the local video game store. And if you ask Reddit, GameStop is already gone.
This is a love letter to the game store. A place I’m really going to miss.

Enjoy Game Stores While They Last
In an era of rapid digital transformation, the physical game store remains a cultural touchstone for gamers of all stripes. From the gleam of freshly opened boxes to the tactile thrill of flipping through rulebooks, these storefronts offer experiences that online catalogs simply can’t replicate. As hobbyists, families, and collectors alike gather in spaces built for discovery, it’s worth pausing to consider what makes these stores special, and why they deserve our support while they endure.
A shared sanctuary for curiosity. The best game stores are more than inventory; they’re curated ecosystems where you can browse, ask questions, and witness the enthusiasm of a community. Staffers—seasoned players, authors, designers, and organizers—bring a human dimension to recommendations, helping newcomers find approachable titles and veterans locate hidden gems. This personalization creates a social fabric that screening a list of product specs can never match.
Discovery happens in the margins. Endcaps, demo tables, and staff picks become portals to experiences you didn’t know you wanted. A single session with a well-chosen trainer, a quick play-through at a demo station, or a friendly league night can unlock a game’s potential long after you leave the store. It’s in these casual, serendipitous moments that a local shop proves its value beyond merely selling merchandise.
Neighborhood hubs, not just storefronts. For many communities, game stores are a weekly heartbeat—places to connect with neighbors over a shared hobby, to celebrate birthdays, or to join a club that meets after school. They host tournaments, teach-ins, and release parties, turning customers into participants and fans into organizers. When a store thrives, the entire area benefits from a richer, more engaged cultural life.
Sustainability through stewardship. The best stores model responsible practices: prioritizing inclusive spaces, stocking a diverse range of titles, supporting indie publishers, and offering space for community-led events. They also adapt with the market, integrating popular formats like online events or curbside pickups while maintaining a physical presence that invites tactile exploration.
What to do to help these spaces endure. First, make a habit of visiting regularly, not just when you’re hunting for a specific game. Try a staff suggestion, join a game night, or trade tips with fellow patrons. Budget a little time to support side activities—paint nights, lore sessions, or charity streams—that bring people through the door. Finally, when possible, prioritize purchases at your local shop over larger online retailers, especially for games that benefit from in-person demonstrations and local event support.
A note on the future. The retail landscape is evolving, and physical game stores will need to adapt to stay relevant. That evolution should honor the core values that make these spaces feel essential: hands-on experiences, community, education, and joy. The goal isn’t nostalgia for nostalgia’s sake, but a conscious investment in spaces that foster imagination and connection in tangible ways.
In closing, enjoying game stores while they last is more than a consumer choice; it’s a commitment to sustaining cultural hubs that amplify imagination, collaboration, and camaraderie. If you’ve ever left a store with a game you didn’t know you’d love, you’ve tasted the magic these places hold. Let’s support them now, so future gamers can discover, learn, and play in the same vibrant, human-centered way.
